3.0 out of 5 stars a little cliche
I ordered this book for a premarital counseling course and read it out of respect for my pastor who assigned it, but I thought it was a little cliche and boring. The authors know a lot of "Charles"s and their scenarios seemed to fit their points a little too well...I dunno. I wasn't hugely satisfied, but if you don't mind cheesy, it's a quick read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this in the 80's!, March 6, 2007
This is a great book that I highly recommend. I love the 4 personality types that are described as 4 animals. It helped me to understand the personalities of my children and accepting them for who they are. "The Treasure Tree" is the childrens simple version. My grandchildren love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for understanding personalities, January 21, 2012

I read this book years ago when my children were little and so they grew up using the personality types that are explained in the book. Once my son said, regarding my friend, who was also his third grade teacher, "Ya know, when she is "Darlene" she is a real otter, but when she is "Mrs S", she is a total beaver!" They have always been able to accept people because they understood basic personality differences at an early age!

The authors were very creative in using these 4 animals to personalize four different personalities that many people fall clearly fall into. This book is a great source for those who desire to improve just about any relationship. I just wish they would improve the examples and the concluding chapter in how to love "better."

Reading this book has taught me a lot about my character traits, the character traits of those around me, God's character traits, and the balance of traits necessary for maturing socially. I really enjoyed it.

3.0 out of 5 stars PERFECT FOR RELIGIOUS PARENTS, April 26, 2010

ITS GREAT FOR CHRISTIAN FAMILIES. IT HAS RELIGION INVOLVED IN IT A LOT WHICH I WASNT EXPENCTING, NOT A RELIGIOUS PERSON MYSELF, BUT IT STILL HAS SOME COMMON SENCE ADVICE THAT IT PROBABLY WOULD'NT HAVE COME TO ME WITH OUT READING THIS BOOK. AS AN NONRELIGIOUS PERSON I SAY I LIKED IT 60%.

4.0 out of 5 stars a great practical guide for relationships, April 7, 2010

This review is from: The Two Sides of Love (Paperback)
The book walks you through the "two sides of love," the hard side and the soft side. It states that we need both for healthy relationships, but that many of us have gotten out of balance one way or the other. It also describes four basic personality types to help you understand how to communicate with different types of people. (We read this book in conjunction with a class that described the personality types in detail, so we had an advantage!) The best quality of this book: it gives practical suggestions on how to develop different characteristics of being "softer" or "harder." It also practically advises you how to improve communication with people in your family who may have a different personality type than you. Like all self help books, the authors provide anecdotal examples which may or may not be helpful. I found this book extremely helpful in understanding a better way to communicate with my husband and even some of my co-workers. The Christian authors provide helpful Scriptural references and use Jesus as a reference point for balanced love.

A very fine offering by Smalley and Trent, and an interesting way to describe people types. If you like books such as Type Talk, or other psychological studies, then you will enjoy reading this. The use of Lions, Beavers, Otters, and Golden Retrievers certainly is more fun to remember than alphabet soup titles often used in such books.
