Book Description

0252023447 978-0252023446 August 1, 1997
This landmark book combines the voices of Native Americans and non-Indians, anthropologists and others, in an exploration of gender and sexuality issues as they relate to lesbian, gay, trans-gendered, and other "marked" Native Americans. Focusing on the concept of two-spirit people - individuals not necessarily gay or lesbian, transvestite or bisexual, but whose behaviors or beliefs may sometimes be interpreted by others as uncharacteristic of their sex - this book is the first to provide an intimate look at how many two-spirit people feel about themselves, how other Native Americans treat them, and how anthropologists and other scholars interpret them and their cultures.

4.0 out of 5 stars It reads like a term paper, January 8, 1998
The book had lots of good information but was hard for me to wade through. It's a series of college papers on the subject of gender and two-spirit people. I think the second half was most helpful (the stories of several two-spirits). Like I said, there was lots of info, it was just a little hard to follow.

In 1992, nearing the twenty-fifth anniversary of the publication of "Berdache: A Brief Review of the Literature" (Jacobs 1968), it became important to me to questions whether the "berdache" [sic] enterprise of the 1980s had been part of a movement for remasculinization of certain American and European men (white heterosexual males with classic education) through the exotification of "others" (particularly males of color and males living in exoticized cultures). Read the first page
