This review is from: Two Trumpets (Audio CD)
"Two Trumpets", recorded in 1956, was a disappointment for me. As a great fan of 50s Byrd, and with the assembled cast - Jackie McLean, Barry Harris, and a favorite rhythm section - Doug Watkins and Art Taylor - I was really expecting this one to cook, and with gas. To my suprise, I found the playing borderline uninspired, and a bit scattered, not to mention the distorted sound quality. Granted, I had just listened to "Byrd in Flight", and perhaps that jaded my perspective. Maybe I should listen again, with a fresh ear, but I just can't get past the sense that this was not anywhere near a special date. Take it for what it's worth from a Byrd lover.
