5.0 out of 5 stars I bought another copy of this - why?, February 1, 2011

This review is from: Two Virgins (Audio CD)
This album was and is wacko. When it came out, it was not readily available. The Beatles' White Album came out soon after. Rumor had it that the White Album was white because they had pasted a white sheet over a nude picture of John and Yoko. Lots of fans trashed the cover of the White Album trying to peel off the white overlay.

"Two Virgins" sounds like the nasty second half of "Revolution #9", if you're merely curious. LoFi musique concrete.

I never ran into the original release. I got a bootleg vinyl LP of this in the eighties. I kind of got it, but I still thought it was weird.

The Rykodisc CD from the nineties, which is identical to this reissue, was very clean and included a "fake surround" effect in the second half, was actually listenable all the way through. The addition of the simple and beautiful B-side "Remember Love" by Yoko was an excellent coda to an avant-garde piece, a poetic way of saying "be nice, and don't take things too seriously".

Putting this CD in a paper sleeve is the capper, and gives it 5 stars. The "outer bag" is all print. If you want to re-create the original bag, you need to cut holes in it to see John and Yoko's faces and the "Two Virgins" title.

The only drawback is that the CD doesn't have the original Apple/Tetragammon label from the original LP. It uses the Rykodisc label instead.

If you've read this much of the review and still want to buy this curio, you need therapy as badly as I do.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Nekkid Album, October 9, 2007

John Sposato (Syracuse, NY, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Two Virgins (Vinyl)
You've all heard of this one. John & Yoko go steady. An album like no other. The cover itself was a scandal. EMI wouldn't touch it. The album, in turn, was released by Tetragammaton in the US and Track in the UK. It is mainly improvised, with mellotron samples and Yoko's trademark writhing! It's almost like "Revolution 9" without the clips.

This is more of a guilty pleasure than a benchmark. Most people wouldn't play this in broad daylight! Avant-garde is still lost on most people today. Fans to this day still see Yoko as an oddball and homewrecker, and this album as a turning point to the John Lennon everyone thought they knew.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well it is John Lennon afterall, January 19, 2009

We (meaning us older folks) all know about the front cover of John and Yoko in their birthday suits. The so called muzak under that infamous LP cover pic is...well...ah ah not for everyone. I have had the LP for many years but only played it once or twice. I found this hard to find cassette (allthough not the original) here on Amazon and was happy to snatch it up for my Beatles collection. I gave it a three star just because it is John, otherwise it is a one star album of recorded material that most will not like. I sure do miss John. It's been 28 years since we lost him. I often wondered how many more great albums we missed out on from him. RIP John & George.
