4.0 out of 5 stars Brow-beatingly bleak
This is certainly a very depressing album.

De/Vision is now constituted by two members, instead of three. Their previous best of album, "Zehn" was also depressing and - at times - extolled atheism. This update ignores atheism in favour of presenting an even bleaker, machine & bass dominated picture, and songs such as "Silent moan",...

2.0 out of 5 stars Amazing band, underwhelming album to say the least.
I consider myself to be very fortunate to have discovered this band here on amazon in my quest to find comparable bands to Depeche Mode in that same vein of dark melodic synthpop. However I am even more fortunate to have chosen this album as one of the last and final additions to complete my De/Vision collection because had I chosen this as my first exposure to the band,...

This is certainly a very depressing album.

De/Vision is now constituted by two members, instead of three. Their previous best of album, "Zehn" was also depressing and - at times - extolled atheism. This update ignores atheism in favour of presenting an even bleaker, machine & bass dominated picture, and songs such as "Silent moan", "Drowning soul", "Escape the world" and "Uncaring machine" are very representative.

Perhaps appropriately, the tempo is slower than on previous works of DeVision. Not all these songs are well-written, frankly: at times depression is more torporific than blindingly painful. The exception is the best, and most depressing, track on the album: the immediately arresting "Heart-Shaped Tumor". Two is worth buying for this track alone in my view.

"Zehn" is certainly a better album (and, being a greatest hits compilation, this is not entirely surprising). However, anyone that enjoys listening to Depeche Mode (and especially styles characteristic of their "Ultra" album) should still buy this offering, "Two" from De/Vision.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mellow at it's best !!!, July 3, 2002

De/Vision has shown everyone how gifted they are; and "TWO" further validated the fact that they're one of the most talented musicians out there nowadays. After somehow a disappointing "Void" album, I think this is the best album they ever created (aside from "Zehn"). The tone of the album is somewhat mellow and more settled. Don't expect any upbeats synthpop here. But somehow, they have managed to keep the album musically & melodically enganging !! Definitely a keeper !! Peace !!

About as close to depeche sounding as you can get. I think this album is flawless. These guys should be heard by all people that love depeche type music.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Two" cool!, January 20, 2002

De/vision has returned stronger than ever, by going back to their musical roots, so to speak. The last CD Void, left a few fans wondering what direction the band was headed in. Two should put those thoughts to rest. I feel this is their best work in years(not that any of their material is poor). All tracks are solid. Most are mid tempo or slower, which isn't a problem for me. The exceptions are "Silent Moan" and "Heart-Shaped Tumor," both shining examples of why De/Vision is so great. I listened to them both 50 times already at least. This is a very personal CD, with lyrics that deal with love, love lost, pain, and the world. It is even slightly dark in spots, emotional, real. As a result, the slower songs are deep and intriguing like "Drowning Soul," "Heroine," and "Escape The World." None drag down or ruin the mood though. "All I Ever Do," "Uncaring Machine," "State Of Mind," and "Lonely Day," are also strong. There is some guitar added to enhance the soundscape here and there, but the synths are still predominant and many. The production is perfect, the vocals are tight, the mix is phat, and all 10 songs are worth-while. De/Vision remains a force in my book...

I have every De/Vision album since Fairyland, and Two is my favorite. I really think they hit a high point here. The songwriting and production is top-notch throughout. "Escape the World" often ends up on repeat.

5.0 out of 5 stars forget Depeche Mode, February 1, 2002
This review is from: Two (Audio CD)
This is Depeche Mode of the new millinium! I am experienced fan of dark pop, industrial, synth pop and other stuff and i must say this is not only best De/Vision album but only albums that can be compared with this are DM Black Celebration and SOFAD. Forget Exciter, this is hundred times better. Production is perfect, this is what new Depeche should sound like and how they sounded with Alan Wilder. Production of George Kaleve is on par with Alan Wilder's. It reminds me of Sofad but with much more modern instruments and sounds. It's very multilayered and still very clear. And the songs? Very dark and majestic. It reminds me with the dark atmosphere and slower style of singing of Depeche Mode's best track Higher Love, there are lots of songs as good as Higher Love here but they are all perfect and original. Singing is also fantastic. Best songs are Lonely Day, Drowning Soul and State of Mind. This album is an all time classic, while you listen to it you are transferred to different world. Does this review sound bombastic? Yes it does but trust me, it deserves it, buy it or you miss ultimate experience. Oh, and this is not just DM clone, De/Vision has their own style, with this album they proved that student can defeat it's master (DM) and be better in the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Caring Machines, April 15, 2009
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Two (Audio CD)
Funny, I'm not much moved by "Silent Moan" and "Heart-Shaped Tumor", the two songs from this album which everyone seems to single out. But I do do do adore "Uncaring Machine". Now THAT is a song which Depeche Mode would have been proud to craft back in 1985 (minus only perhaps the guitar riff). Uncaring Machine proves why De/Vision themselves are caring machines indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mellow, but more mature, September 17, 2002
This review is from: Two (Audio CD)
A overall more laid back sound from the (now) twosome that makes up De/Vision, but still a album full of great pop songs that are very memorable.
