He provides numerous eyewitness accounts of notable people and events, including the lost dream of Arab-Jewish accord, British conduct in Palestine, the promotion of Hebrew as a modern language, the Falashas, Ethiopian customs, and the political upheaval in Ethiopia that brought about the fall of Selassie.

Part memoir, part history, these delightful reminiscences recall a less brutal and more hopeful time in Jerusalem and in the "second Zion," Ethiopia. As a student at the University of Jerusalem before World War II, the author knew many of the greats of the time and witnessed the rebirth of the Hebrew language. Middle Eastern politics, though turbulent, lacked the murderous polarity of later years and a peaceful modus vivendi did not seem an unattainable goal. During the war the author served in the British administration of Ethiopia. His knowledge of the local languageshe later was a semantic languages professer at London Universityinnate curiosity, and ability as a raconteur allow the reader a privileged view of Ethiopia and the Palestinian Protectorate.
