5.0 out of 5 stars Great, one of my favorites!, February 4, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Two's Company - Complete Series 2 (DVD)
American thriller author, Dorothy McNab (ably played by Elaine Stritch) has come to England to enjoy a slower place of life. Overall, it doesn't live up to her expectations, but at least (unlike Europe) people speak "American." But, she does need a butler to run her house for her. Who should walk through her door, but Robert (Donald Sinden), an extremely capable butler with a profound sense of superiority towards upstart colonials? The fur flies, and hilarity ensues as this unlike pair set up house together.

This is a great British comedy - one of my favorites, and my wife's all-time favorite! As a matter of fact, not long after we were first married, PBS began airing this great show, and I used it to introduce my bride to the joys of British humor (that is to say, "humour"). Overall, we found this to be a lot of fun, and enjoy watching it over and over again. So, if you want to see a fun and entertaining Britcom, then I highly recommend that you get this DVD. It's great!

By the way, this DVD includes all seven of the episodes from the second (1977) series, plus the 1976 Christmas special. (You will notice below that for some reason the episodes are not in chronological order.) The eight episodes are:

Robert's Record Player - 7 February 1977 - When Robert begins playing his new Bach album at top volume, he soon finds himself at war with an irate neighbor, but before you know it, it's Dorothy who finds herself in court!

The Reluctant Traveller - 10 January 1977 - Dorothy needs to go to New York, and wants to take Robert with her, but she did not reckon on his aversion to flying. He will stop at nothing to keep from flying, nothing.

The Honeymoon - 31 January 1977 - There's a newly wed couple that need Dorothy's help, but do they need Robert's?

The Burglary - 17 January 1977 - When Dorothy and Robert come home to find the house burgled, they are first upset, and then panicked!

The Rubbish - 24 January 1977 - The dustbin men normally only take rubbish that is first placed in a can, but Dorothy has more than will fit in her two cans, and when Robert takes a highhand with them, Dorothy soon finds herself at war with them.

The Guests - 14 February 1977 - When Dorothy invites a group of robed young people who are on their way to India for meditation, Robert objects most strenuously, but when their leader shows up it's a question of who is going to end up on top!

The Cleaning Ladies - 21 February 1977 - Dorothy wants a cleaning lady for around the house, but Robert has very high standards when it comes to domestic help, very high standards indeed!

A Loving Christmas - 25 December 1976 - It's Christmas, and Dorothy is planning on tricking Robert into leaving for the holiday, so she can have a romantic weekend with her new men. However, she is in for a surprise when it turns out that Robert had been planning on the same thing. But, before it's all said and done, they are BOTH in for a surprise.

4.0 out of 5 stars more fun with Elaine and Donald!, June 30, 2010

This review is from: Two's Company - Complete Series 2 (DVD)
Commissioned by London Weekend Television (LWT) in 1975, TWO'S COMPANY starred the divine Elaine Stritch as Dorothy McNab, an American mystery novelist living and working in London, who takes on the stuffy, oh-so-teddibly British Robert (Donald Sinden) as her butler. Sparks fly when Dorothy, who is under the false belief that everyone is meant to have equal footing in this life, is "instructed" by Robert in the correct way (ie: HIS way) of running a household. Madly bashing away at the typewriter, Dorothy needs an organised and relaxed home life...but she never counted on tightly-wound Robert. Just WHO is the help and who is the boss?!

Wickedly scripted by Bill MacIllwraith, TWO'S COMPANY offered viewers of British comedy something a little more sophisticated and biting than the usual fare, with the humour extending from the dry wordplay between Dorothy and Robert. The show came during one of Elaine Stritch's most prolific periods of her professional career. She had chiefly relocated to London for the successful West End transfer of "Company", but decided to stay in the country on a full-time basis when she married English actor John Bay. Setting up housekeeping at the Savoy Hotel no less, Stritch was the darling of the London talk show circuit, starred as Aunt Polly in a miniseries of "Pollyanna" for the BBC, and of course remained as the acerbic Dorothy for three more series of TWO'S COMPANY.

Series 2 of TWO'S COMPANY includes the following episodes:

"Robert's Record Player" - It's an impossible stand-off when Robert insists on playing his classical music at the volume he believes it deserves...

"The Reluctant Traveler" - Dorothy needs all her powers of diplomacy (or cunning) when she has to convince Robert to board a plane...

"The Honeymoon" - Young couple Jack and Jenny (Ed Bishop and Liza Ross) appeal for romantic help...

"The Burglary" - One of the funniest episodes. Discovering that the house has been robbed, Robert becomes convinced he'll be the main suspect...

"The Rubbish" - Dorothy locks horns with the dreaded dustmen when her weekly trash allowance is exeeded...

"The Guests" - Dorothy takes in a group of Indian prayer seekers...

"The Cleaning Ladies" - Dorothy interviews two prospective cleaning ladies (Patsy Rowlands and Andonia Katsaros), but Robert is more picky about who he trusts to maintain his antique furniture...

"A Loving Christmas" - Dorothy and Robert both plan to spend the Christmas break with a romantic partner, but the last laugh might just be on them...
