5.0 out of 5 stars Spice and Laughs, August 28, 2005
This review is from: Two's Company - Complete Series Three (DVD)
I have all three of the series of Two's Company.. I love the fun that these two characters have with one another.. Their banter and repartee is what makes it so much fun.. These two actors are good in their own right, but together they are extra special.. I watch them often and get such a kick out of their play.. I would recommend it to anyone that loves the British humor and a Brassy lady from the stage..Elaine Stritch is still going strong even after all these years. It is nice to see her appear with her late husband playing her cousin in series number two "A Loving Christmas". Two's Company has weathered the years nicely... Kudos to all involved..C. F. Marsh

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than the first two seasons!, July 22, 2005

This review is from: Two's Company - Complete Series Three (DVD)
American thriller author, Dorothy McNab (ably played by Elaine Stritch) has come to England to enjoy a slower place of life. Overall, it doesn't live up to her expectations, but at least (unlike Europe) people speak "American." But, she does need a butler to run her house for her. Who should walk through her door, but Robert (Donald Sinden), an extremely capable butler with a profound sense of superiority towards upstart colonials? The fur flies, and hilarity ensues as this unlike pair set up house together.

This is a great British comedy - one of my favorites, and my wife's all-time favorite! As a matter of fact, not long after we were first married, PBS began airing this great show, and I used it to introduce my bride to the joys of British humor (that is to say, "humour"). Overall, we found this to be a lot of fun, and enjoy watching it over and over again. So, if you want to see a fun and entertaining Britcom, then I highly recommend that you get this DVD. It's great!

By the way, this DVD includes all eight of the episodes from the third (1978) series. I must say, the third season is even better than the first two, and I can hardly wait for the fourth season to be released! The eight episodes included on this DVD are:

The Invitation - 22 January 1978 - When Dorothy is invited to tea with the Queen, Robert becomes so full of himself that he proves to be more of a hindrance than a help!

The Freezer - 29 January 1978 - Dorothy wants a freezer so that she can make herself a frozen pizza every once in a while, but Robert will not hear of such a travesty occurring in his kitchen. Who will come out the winner?

The Pet - 5 February 1978 - While out on a walk, Dorothy finds a cute little dog that simply steals her heart away. Robert does not approve of dogs, and begins to lay his plans.

The Take-Over Bid - 12 February 1978 - Dorothy has a temporary chauffeur who begins to set his sites on Robert's job. But, will Robert go quietly off into the unemployment queue?

The Virus - 19 February 1978 - When Dorothy gets sick, it's bad enough, but when Robert gets sick he turns into the most miserable patient on earth!

The Critic - 26 February 1978 - A scalding review of Dorothy's thrillers appears in the paper, attracting a great deal of attention. Now, who would write such a review?

The Picnic - 5 March 1978 - It's Dorothy's birthday, and Robert has decided to present her with a picnic in the English countryside. But, when a couple of Dorothy's old friends drop in all Robert's plans are thrown into turmoil.

The Politicians - 26 March 1978 - When Dorothy gets together with two MPs to discuss her idea for a hostel for young American authors living in Britain Robert takes an immediate dislike to one. Can Dorothy keep Robert off their back, and ram her idea through Parliament? Don't count on it!

Although one has to have a taste for Elaine's straight-forward humor, this dvd set, the third in the series, has some truly funny moments. I wish someone would release "Open All Hours" on dvd, one of Britain's best comedies.

Commissioned by London Weekend Television (LWT) in 1975, TWO'S COMPANY starred the divine Elaine Stritch as Dorothy McNab, an American mystery novelist living and working in London, who takes on the stuffy, oh-so-teddibly British Robert (Donald Sinden) as her butler. Sparks fly when Dorothy, who is under the false belief that everyone is meant to have equal footing in this life, is "instructed" by Robert in the correct way (ie: HIS way) of running a household. Madly bashing away at the typewriter, Dorothy needs an organised and relaxed home life...but she never counted on tightly-wound Robert. Just WHO is the help and who is the boss?!

Wickedly scripted by Bill MacIllwraith, TWO'S COMPANY offered viewers of British comedy something a little more sophisticated and biting than the usual fare, with the humour extending from the dry wordplay between Dorothy and Robert. The show came during one of Elaine Stritch's most prolific periods of her professional career. She had chiefly relocated to London for the successful West End transfer of "Company", but decided to stay in the country on a full-time basis when she married English actor John Bay. Setting up housekeeping at the Savoy Hotel no less, Stritch was the darling of the London talk show circuit, starred as Aunt Polly in a miniseries of "Pollyanna" for the BBC, and of course remained as the acerbic Dorothy for three more series of TWO'S COMPANY.

Series 3 of TWO'S COMPANY includes the following episodes:

"The Invitation" - Dorothy's off to have tea with the Queen. That is, IF she can escape from her wacky dress designer (Rosalind Ayres)...

"The Freezer" - To Dorothy, a home freezer is a great way to save money on food. To Robert, it's nothing less than a cardinal sin. Battle lines are drawn...

"The Pet" - She's So Darling... Dorothy wants a dog, but she has to go through Robert first. Guest starring Beryl Reid.

"The Take-Over Bid" - Dorothy's new chauffeur and his kitchen-whiz wife (Colin Jeavons and Bridget Turner) poise themselves to usurp Robert's place...

"The Virus" - As Dorothy is knocked out with a minor bug, Robert decides to milk the situation in his own favour by convieniently falling ill as well...

"The Critic" - Dorothy's work is slammed in the public press by an anonymous new reviewer...

"The Picnic" - Robert's birthday treat for Dorothy flies out the window when two unexpected friends drop in...

"The Politicians" - Dorothy's appeal for a special hostel catering to upcoming American authors looks to be scuppered when Robert starts locking horns with one of her would-be supporters...

5.0 out of 5 stars This should've been the last season...period!, April 23, 2010

The show brought up the issues that the United States is now grappling with today such as Socialized Medicine, VAT taxes, and the cost of living. It teaches us with humor and the show has characters that are likable to most. Also, I love the tv shows song prior to the beginning of the show(my roommate hates it)since it tells their constant struggles to win the argument. In the end, they're the best of friends no matter how much they disagree with each other. This British tv series is a gem among many comedies that I've watched over the years! A must have for all fans!
