3.0 out of 5 stars Stirring The Pot
I have several of Tyler's cookbooks. I'm sorry to say this is my least favorite. There are some interesting recipes, but they're all pretty high fat/cholesterol. I'm altering some of them to fit our lifestyle, but I think he could be more inventive making food taste good without or with less butter and cream.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great One, January 14, 2009
This review is from: Stirring The Pot (Paperback)
When I first noticed that Tyler was releasing two books the same month I thought it was a ploy to sell twice as many books. When I looked through them however, I realized that they were really very different in style. Dinner at My Place offers menus for meals, although any of the dishes can be prepared independently. The theme is more about creating whole meals for friends and family. Stirring the Pot is more about teaching different cooking techniques and what types of dishes are best produced using those techniques. There are lessons on stocking your kitchen, purchasing gadgets, sharpening knives, etc. But then the book's chapters are titled things like "Roasting," "Braising," "Frying," etc. Each chapter offers a selection of great recipes using that cooking method. I understand why Tyler released the books separately, but I also know why I purchased both of them. Because they are great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tyler Florence Stirring the Pot, January 30, 2009

Such a book! Recipes, advice...I am a good cook, but when I read what I should be doing in my kitchen I put the book down and first of all cleaned out the refrigerator, because Tyler gave me permission. Then I cleaned out the freezer, because without his permission everything would have gone a considerable time longer before I felt I could throw food out!
I really gave my whole kitchen a good going over and then shared the book with my kids instead of my telling them what to do. All the recipes and tips tried so far are also knockout. Great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cooking 101 and then some, January 8, 2010

I love this cookbook. The biggest draw for me is that it really helps the beginning and even intermediate cook understand the benefits of each cooking technique (while of course giving you some great recipes to try your new tricks on). The beginning of the cookbook has some GREAT insights and information on the type of cookware and cutlery that suits the budget of everyone who loves cooking. From those who want quality without the price tag to those who are looking to buy once for life and spend the cash to get it, there's something for everyone. And if you're that person who, like me, couldn't figure out why you needed 9 different knives or why your carefully wrapped food still seemed to contract freezer burn, there's a section in the book for that too. Of course, the recipes aren't bad either.

If I had to find a negative I will admit I was slightly turned off by the fact that the one set of cookware he suggests for anodized aluminum is his own line...while it may be good, I found it just hit me the wrong way. But it could be appropriate - I haven't tried it.

5.0 out of 5 stars From a Tyler Florence Fan!, May 23, 2009

This review is from: Tyler Florence: Stirring the Pot (Paperback)
I have followed Tyler Florence for years and practice regularly his style and techniques in my kitchen. I don't own all of his books as I don't need an oversized collection of my favorite chefs but peruse reviews and tables of contents on occasion for a book that I might use quite often so that it really pays for itself. This is definately one that I recommend keeping in your kitchen. The recipes inside are ones that are enjoyed by all of our family members, including the kids. He has great tips on how to arrange your kitchen to make it more user friendly. This would make a great gift as well for a novice or a seasoned chef. Enjoy! Shawn

Gift for my hushand that has made several of Tyler's dishes from the food network and He is just starting to cook as a hobby. Great and easy directions for him to follow. The dishes have been really good too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better then expected, March 22, 2010

Didn't know what to expect from a Tyler Florence book, but have to admit it's better then expected. First of all he starts off by covering some basics like knives, pots/pans, etc. Then he goes on to describe the different types of cooking (roasting, basting, etc) then he leaves us with some GREAT recipes. Already tried one and liked it. Can't wait to try a few more.

5.0 out of 5 stars incredible results, March 4, 2011

This review is from: Stirring The Pot (Paperback)
I've owned this cookbook for a few years and have tried almost all the recipes. To me, that's a success. The recipes are easy to follow and the results are amazing. His version of the Beef Stroganoff just melts in your mouth. And the yorkshire pudding with the roast....wow! The lime pudding cakes... everything came out exactly like the photos. If you want to make a dinner to impress, reach for this cookbook.

I do have to agree with one of the other reviews, the recipes are not for the diet conscious. They're definitely an indulgence. But worth every delicious bite!

I like this cookbook very much. It starts with the basics. I have given this book as a gift to children of family and friends who are newly engaged. They thank me, saying it has helped them plan their gift registry for bridal showers and wedding. Good job Tyler. Doria
