Dr Stuart Brink, Senior Endocrinologist at NEDEC,
By Stuart Brink, MD (Waltham, MA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Insulin-Dependent Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Adults - How to become an expert on your own diabetes (Paperback)
Dr Hanas' diabetes instructional manual is well written, easy to read and understand. The book is filled with humor and common-sense advice which is practical, positive and upbeat! Dr Hanas includes the latest medical as well as psychosocial concepts gleaned from years of experience providing care to infants, toddlers, children, adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus aiming for the best glucose control possible. His approach provides information that allows parents and kids to take charge of their own diabetes care and slowly but surely become their own experts. Highly recommended :>Stuart Brink, MD Senior Endocrinologist at NEDEC: New England Diabetes and Endocrinology Center, Waltham, MA, USA and Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, MA, USA

A book by a doctor who TRULY cares !!,
This review is from: Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults: How to Become an Expert on Your Own Diabetes, Second Edition (Paperback)
When you open this book you will immediately feel the dedication Dr. Hanas has for persons living with diabetes. This book guides patients to live full, healthy, and productive lives, and fit the necessary diabetes care into their lifestyle. This book will empower you and make you feel good about your options.
I love that "Type 1 Diabetes: How to Become an Expert on Your Own Diabetes" is both comprehensive and extremely readable. There are some drawings from children included in the book that will make you stop and take a deep breath -- only a doctor who TRULY understands what life is like with diabetes, would include such drawings. The graphics keep the book lively and the charts and diagrams make complex concepts, understandable. My son has had type 1 diabetes for 16 years and I've read many diabetes books in that time. This one is tops.

Excellent resource for ID adults too,
By Rochelle L. Stern (Princeton Junction, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Insulin-Dependent Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Adults - How to become an expert on your own diabetes (Paperback)
When someone is first diagnosed with diabetes, it can be an overwhelming experience. There is so much information on the market, and much of it can be quite unnerving especially if the diabetes book emphasizes possible complications from the disease. Dr. Hanas' book is very light-hearted and upbeat, and emphasizes, rather, the means to manage the disease. Inherent in diabetes is the requirement that the patient manage his or her own diabetes on a daily basis---being his or her own doctor in a sense. This book provides the tools and tips to understand and manage the disease. A wealth of information, and an excellent resource. --An adult diabetic

Review of an excellent book on type I diabetes,
By "abender" (Phialadelphia, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Insulin-Dependent Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Adults - How to become an expert on your own diabetes (Paperback)
This book is a very well written, clear treatise on insulin dependent diabetes. As a practicing physician and diabetic of 36 years duration, I hiughly recommend it for anyone trying to learn more about this illness which often results in more questions than answers when trying to learn about management and how to approach the problems that one encounters in everyday life with this illness. Unlike many books on this subject it answers more questions than it produces. But it does also ask provocative questions of the reader.leaving the reader with material to discuss with their physicians.

This book has helped us so much.
The doctors don't help you too much so you are left with a million questions and this book has helped so much. This disease is so overwelming and this book is so helpful in easy to understand words. Instead of going into a panic when something happens we now just go to the book and it calms us right down. Thank God this book is here.

A must have for parent & 10 year old,

This review is from: Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults (Class Health) (Paperback)
As a parent of a recently diagnosed 10 year old boy, I have purchased dozens of books and most have been good. However, only two so far are on my 'MUST HAVE' list: "Think like a pancreas', and this book 'Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults: How to Become an Expert on Your Own Diabetes'. The latter was the only book I felt was interesting & appropriate for both of us so I purchased two copies - one for him and one for myself. It will remain a great reference book once we're finished reading it. In my opinion, these 2 books are a must if your situation is similar to mine. This book's cover may throw you off by looking too juvenile but trust me in that it doesn't talk down to a ten year old (or a teenager) - in fact, it seems geared to that age group rather than a very young child (under 8 maybe).

I have only received this book recently, so I have not read the whole thing. The author doesn't recommend reading it from cover to cover, but to use it more as a reference. I started reading it at the beginning and am now on page 46. It is so interesting, and easy to read, that I see no reason NOT to read it straight through! Even though a lot of the information is technical, it is written in such a way so as to make it fairly easy to understand. My 13-year-old son has only had Type 1 diabetes for three months now and I am hungry for this kind of information. I want to understand this disease as much as possible, and so far, this book is great!

Must have,
By Lily Amelia "Lo" (Danbury, CT United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Type 1 Diabetes: A Guide for Children, Adolescents, Young Adults--and Their Caregivers, Third Edition (Paperback)
This book is wonderful. I got it shortly after my son was diagnosed and read it cover to cover. I was so happy to have a book with so much information that didn't make me cry from the introduction. So many of the diabetes books begin with a very clinical review of the complications of diabetes. I continue to refer to this book and learn things as I gain more experience with diabetes care. This is a fantastic book loaded with information, but at the same time it is not intimidating like some of the others. Best book I have so far - great reference.
