5.0 out of 5 stars Incomparable sci-fi
One of thType IIIe many reasons the sci-fi novel Type III is such a fascinating an engrossing read is because its story builds on and interweaves familiar aspects of current politics, human behavior, and human interests as well as the honest and duplicitous interactions between national governments and between governments and their own people. The horrors of warfare and...

It's always interesting when different people have such different opinions of a book. Here are some of my reasons for rating the book so low: I felt the writing was without talent. There were too many named minor characters I didn't care about. A person couldn't enter a room without a sterile description of the environ. When we finally meet the aliens, they happen to know the earth colloquialism "in for a penny, in for a pound". I got past halfway, waiting for the story to pull me in, but finally put the book down for good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incomparable sci-fi, July 19, 2008
This review is from: Type III (Paperback)
One of thType IIIe many reasons the sci-fi novel Type III is such a fascinating an engrossing read is because its story builds on and interweaves familiar aspects of current politics, human behavior, and human interests as well as the honest and duplicitous interactions between national governments and between governments and their own people. The horrors of warfare and torture are examined in this story. Altruistic and duplicitous humans and aliens interact and produce the drama and conflict that keep this story exciting. The high tech gadgets and weapons don't overwhelm the story but keep it moving in unexpected directions. The humans in this story are much more technologically advanced than we are today. For example, they are able to use suspended animation to put humans in an ageless and unconscious state in which they can exist with out food and water for ten years and they are able to harness the power of antimatter. Even though the alien species the Saydus and the Vaysus are far more technologically advanced than their human counterparts, and we are introduced to many of the seemingly magical things they can do, what makes them less inscrutable and more vulnerable with respect to their opponents than one would expect is their own societal failings and personal weaknesses such as militarism and hubris. As one reads through Type III one is frequently acquiring new pieces to an unimaginable puzzle.
