Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Combining form, function, and style, Typhoon has created a unique line of cookware tools, kitchen gadgets, and dinnerware items that coordinate with a variety of home decors and occasions. Designed with a contemporary flair, many of the housewares products blend a sophisticated sensibility with a retro edginess.

What better way to smash garlic and spices than with a traditional pestle and mortar set. Made from heavy matte finish cast iron, that won't move when being used, the set includes a small 3-ounce mortar that fits into the larger 7-ounce mortar for easy storage. The large bowl sits on a non-skid rubber foot and has a small spout for pouring. Both mortars can be used together when recipes require more than one type of spice or herb to be ground. The accompanying pestle is also crafted from cast iron and contains a stainless steel top attached to the handle. Typhoon recommends washing by hand and not soaking in water. --Lea Werbel

4.0 out of 5 stars cast iron mortar, August 7, 2007

This review is from: Typhoon 3-Piece Cast Iron Pestle and Mortar Set (Kitchen)
I grind eggshells to dust in this (to add as calcium supplement to homemade dog food) and bought it specifically because it was cast iron instead of something softer or more scratchable. It suits my purpose perfectly. My only quibble is that the pestle is a little short for use with the larger bowl and my hand then gets in the way. But with the smaller bowl, I find it a fine ergonomic fit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Little Mortar Set, March 1, 2007

I like this mortar and pestle set by Typhoon. The cast iron has a rough surface that really grabs the herbs and makes for quick work when I need to crush them. The mortar is small enough that I can easily hold it in my hand to use it, or it is heavy enough that it works well just sitting on the counter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nifty mortar set, May 19, 2008

This review is from: Typhoon 3-Piece Cast Iron Pestle and Mortar Set (Kitchen)
This is a good mortar set, and for the price it is well worth it. Cast iron means heavy and durable construction. The only strange thing about the set is the pestle. Why the screw off top? With or without the strange little top, it doesn't fit very comfortably in the hand. If you're crushing herbs or spices this is a great little set. If you're doing anything more heavy duty, I think I'd go with something larger.
