"Typical" is a humorous, captivating book. The plot follows five friends as they journey across America. Even though, the plot is not a new concept the author puts a unique spin on this. Their destinations are all familiar American attractions; however their encounters at these attractions are anything but typical. The perspectives of each character are both intriguing and thought provoking. It is true that what one person considers typical, another person may not. I would definitely recommend this book to other people.

What is typical? What is the typical American person supposed to do as he or she reaches adulthood? It is questions such as these that Elvis Morrison asks as he and four of his friends take a random trip across America. For his friends it is a vacation, but for Elvis it is a journey toward self-discovery. Questions are posed and numerous perspectives are offered. The typical problems, norms, issues, and assumptions pertaining to life in America are discussed by Elvis and his band of friends.
What is so interesting about Elvis' trip across America with four of his closest friends? Perhaps it is the beer bottle bashing biker bar, owned and operated by lesbians, the casino on an Indian reservation, the blues bar, the strip club with cross-dressing patrons and strippers who are Buddhist practitioners, their tour of the Grand Canyon, their alarming visit to the assassination site of JFK, their brief stay at a campground that serves as the home of a midget nudist colony, their brief encounter with a Native American gay tribal dance party, Elvis' encounter with a psychotic pseudo bull ride operator, their brief stay in Vegas, which included a debacle at a local sorority house, the streets of LA, or any one of the many odd people, places, and situations they encountered that don't happen every day but could happen to anyone on any given day.

This novel is the On the Road, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, The Bell Jar, and Siddhartha amalgamation that readers of the new millennium avidly seek but can't seem to find. It is original, full of wit, and innovative. It is the book that people who are fed up with trying to be a typical person in a typical world need to read. If you want to laugh out loud and think deeply read this book.
