How mature?,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Typing of the Dead (CD-ROM)
This game is rated Mature because of the violence. I'm usually very conservative about violence....for some reason this game's violence is less alarming to me than most. I'm an excellant typist and the arcade and original modes of the game are very challenging for me. The game has basic typing tutor modes that can lead someone from the beginning keyboarding. Yet it also has levels that are challenging enough for the typing pros. It's a welcome addition to my computer game collection. Has good replay value.

Taught The Whole Family To Type!,
By
This review is from: The Typing of the Dead (CD-ROM)
I now have an 11 year old that types 80 wpm. This is the best, the funnest, typing instructional I have ever seen. I am going to buy a copy for my daughter's school. Originally released for Sega Dreamcast, this exceptionally entertaining game will have the whole family standing around the monitor watching you kill zombies by typing the words and phrases on their chests. Each letter of the word fires a shot off. The completion of the word or phrase kills the zombie (who is approaching you with zombie like speed). The phrases are hilarious! The faster you are at typing, the more citizens you save in the zombie ravaged city. Type really fast for bonus levels! Strangely addictive. A non-typer could play this game and learn to touch type quickly.

I am a typing buff, and I type pretty fast. I wanted to learn how to type in a fun way. I like typing games, so when I heard about his my curiosity was piqued.... The game is really great. It's like The House of the Dead, minus the guns and aiming. What's the +? That's where the keyboard comes in. If you don't type, you die. It's that simple. It's hilarious when you see some funny phrases. And what better way to learn typing? I mean, you're having a blast(pun intended)! This game is definitely a typing tutor. The M rating is somewhat alarming for a typing software. But it's not very gory, really. The great thing about this game is that it's just pure keyboard. Don't worry about maneuvers or quicky gun shots. It's all in the hands. And form is important! I've seen people in my typing class who type with the wrong fingers! It's only going to lower your speed! Remember, left pinky on A, right on sem! If you are looking for a fun, funny, fantastic way to learn typing without the repetetiveness of traditional typing software programs, you've come to the right place. You'll type funny stuff and kill zombies? That's a great idea!

What a very odd game this is! Designed, I believe, to hone the skills of the indifferent typist, with drills where demons are destroyed when you correctly type the words floating over their heads. It sounds like a good thing for the kids, huh? No, not really. The level of typing expertise required to win is phenomenal. (I'm an excellent typist, 70 wpm+, and I only rated a B+. I beg your pardon?!) It's not suited to someone just learning to type (beginning touchtyping section notwithstanding), and it's much too frustrating for kids; on the other hand, if you already know how to type and just want a good excuse to make yourself practice, this is your baby.
Voice acting is hysterically bad, sound effects are deafening, plot is nonexistent, graphics are okay but nothing to write home about, and there's only six levels. So why is it so addictive?

And who said typing can't be fun? I found "The Typing of the Dead" to be a pretty entertaining way to improve typing skills. It can be difficult at times, being that there's a lot going on, but once you get into the game you can play it for hours."The Typing of the Dead" is a typing version of the arcade game "The House of the Dead." Instead of having a gun as your weapon, your weapon is the keyboard. The faster you type, the more zombies you take out. Type words before the zombies can attack you, otherwise the next grave you see is your very own. The game is equipped with different modes. One of my favorites is the "Boss Mode," where you get to select any boss you want and see how fast you can take them down. Some you only have to type single words, while others you have to type full sentences. There's also a "Drill Mode" that comes equipped with games to help you on accuracy, speed, reflexes, and more. There is also "Story Mode," "Arcade Mode," and "Training Mode." While this is a fun way to improve typing skills, I'd only recommend this to people who already know how to type. This isn't the best program for beginners since there's so much going on. It could be very difficult for beginners, even on the "Very Easy" level. I'm not saying that no beginners should try it, just saying that I think it might be tougher for those who are just learning to type. But this is a great tool for those of us who already know how to type but want to improve. It's very easy to use and install. "The Typing of the Dead" is an amusing typing program that can help you improve your typing ability, and allow you to have fun at the same time. It's got neat graphics and a neat concept. This is something I will be playing with for a while. Plenty of things for you to experience on this fine CD-Rom.

Seriously Fun!,

A great typing tutor! Compared to modern PC games, the graphics are poor, and the voice talent terrible, but as a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat typing game, it's a blast. How many typing programs can make that claim? A great way to teach teenagers - but make sure they know it's about typing first, otherwise they may give it a poor review....I'm ~sure~ I wrote this review faster and more accurately as a result of this game! ;-)

Something not mentioned, and perhaps not noticed, by the 'hardcore' typists who reviewed the game here, is that the difficulty level adjusts to your typing speed. If you become overwhelmed, the game will throw smaller words at you so you can keep up. Grade performances are made based on accuracy, and a 'perfect score' is just about as impossible as it is in the lightgun games. The ultimate Mavis Beacon killer.

I had tried other typing instructors to no avail. They were too frickin boring. Here was a typing instructor mixed in with a cool arcade shooter. The phrases the game makes the user type are often hilarious. To boot, the original game boasts some of the funniest (read: horrible) voice acting in the history of gaming. One thing is certain- this is a FUN instructor. The game has so many useful modes- including what I found to be very effective tutorial and drill modes. Now that I've become somewhat proficient, I return to the game every now and then to hone my skills and...have fun. And to think that i found this in the bargain bin for 2.99- probably the best 2.99 I will ever spend in my life! highly recommended.

The Typing of the Dead,

I purchased this game after playing the demo from cdi-wholesalers/Amazon and it arrived in 2 days "brand spad new". The game is funny, entertaining and you will type faster. When there are zombies and other monsters attacking and all you can do is type to stay alive...YOU WILL TYPE OR DIE BUDDY! I have used a few other typing programs and they were just fine but this ones for me. I hope they come up with an updated version like "The Typing of the Dead 2". I will be the first on in line for that one.

Mindless game turned educational?,

I was never a huge fan of the original HOTD. Lightgun games were never my thing, but typing...now typing I can do. This has to be the most amusing and creative game I have seen in ages. I easily type 80+wpm, and have found countless challenges within this game. I agree with the other reviewers though, it may be frustrating for beginners...but if you learn best by being thrown in the middle of things, this game is perfect.I am easily amused by games that the general public would normally find either corny, childish, or just plain stupid. At first glance, this game would fall under the last catagory...but don't let it fool you. Hidden within this is a gem of a typing tutor. |
