Unique Addition to Any Typophile's Library, August 25, 2008
This review is from: Typosphere: New Fonts to Make You Think (Loft Publications) (Hardcover)
This English-language reissue provides a quick overview of some important contemporary type designers and their creations. The authors review a fairly unique collection of typefaces in this compact book. Anyone interested in type design would appreciate this book on a few levels. First, it features sketches and development drawings of many typefaces in progress, showing some of the designers' thought process. Secondly, there are quite a few examples of the typefaces in use, which always gives a nice context to the types, since they can often look and feel quite different when just seen as an alphabet or specimen. Third, the authors provide nice insight into the qualities of many of the designs, pointing out some neat aesthetic and practical details which make them unique and interesting. I didn't necessarily agree completely with the authors' categorization of designs, and I would have liked to see more specimens of complete type families, but the editing and curation of types is delightful and the book is nicely fast-paced, with lots of illustrations. The price is right, too.
