Grade 3-5-- Most collections never have enough dinosaur books, particularly on that favorite beast, Tyrannosaurus rex . With the glut of dinosaur books on the market, however, it is possible to be very selective. This offering is not a bad book, but it is flawed. Inexcusable is the labeled painting on the verso of the title page depicting Tyrannosaurus rex as having three front claws instead of two. Petersen mentions a new theory about the way in which the "king of the tyrant lizards" may have walked (leaning forward with its huge tail carried off the ground), but all of the drawings and paintings show the dinosaur standing and walking upright. Large print and many illustrations create an unimposing format; difficult words and scientific terms are defined in the glossary. Although lacking a glossary, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Its Kin: The Mesozoic Monsters (Lothrop, 1989) by Helen Roney Sattler is a sounder purchase. --Denia Lewis Hester, Dewey School, Evanston, IL
