Book Description

Tyrant 2 January 22, 2009
Kineas, the Athenian cavalry commander, has come a long way since being dismissed from the army of Alexander and vengefully exiled by his own city. Together, his mercenary force and their Scythian allies have defeated a mighty Macedonian army at the Ford of the River God, and his adopted city of Olbia is now free once more. But his destiny will not allow him to enjoy the fruits of victory for long. Far to the east, at the farthest edge of the Sea of Grass, Alexander is threatening to crush the Scythian hordes once and for all. The Lady Srayanka of the Cruel Hands, the Scythian warrior-princess who spurned a king's love to be at Kineas's side, is pledged to take her tribe east to help stop 'the monster' - and Kineas knows he has no choice but to follow, even if it means embracing the violent death in battle that he has seen prefigured in countless dreams. But long before he can confront the might of Alexander's army alongside his beloved Srayanka, he must undertake an epic journey, of breathtaking daring, taking an army through hundreds of miles of hostile terrain - towards his own appointment with fate.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'[A] great page-turner.' ANCIENT WARFARE 'The minutiae of military logistics, the mediations in inter-tribe rivalries, and the casual contemporary scene-setting prove unexpectedly engrossing... a sword-slash above the rest of its ilk.' IRISH EXAMINER 'A sweeping, deeply moving epic that takes the reader into the heart of a different time and culture.' HISTORICAL NOVELS REVIEW 'The author has picked a forgotten part of history and brough it to life with wonderful characters and amazingly vivid battle scenes... a story that is sweeping, powerful and provides a fresh look at the past.' HUDDERSFIELD DAILY EXAMINER --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars THE FIRST ONE IS FIVE STARS, THIS ONE FOUR, September 12, 2009
I read Christian Cameron's TYRANT and abosolutely loved it. If you like strongly written historical fiction about ancient Greece/Rome/Egypt, you'll love it too. I like it so much, that I immediately ordered the sequel, TYRANT: STORM OF ARROWS all the way from England because it wasn't published here in the USA yet. The second book is almost as good, but gets bogged down in a lot of political/administrative details during the first half of the book, rather than concentrate on action sequences as does the first one. (Of course as one gets older, generally that is true of life -- so it is hard to fault the author seriously for that.) I also think this story hung on an improbable situation -- that the Sakje queen would have been held captive by Alexander. But the battle sequences are superb. And the author makes you care about the characters -- even though there are a lot of them -- and gives them motivations and reactions that are honest and believable. The characters and their relationships are what really make these books stand out from a lot of such works being published today.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Historical Fiction Writer, June 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Christian Cameron's Tyrant series of books are the absolute best of any historical fiction writer available today.

The characters are finely drawn and the plot moves along at a riveting pace. The battle scenes are vivid, accurate and realistic in the extreme.

I pour a libation to the Gods in anticipation of book 4 of the series and any other books he has planned!
