Editorial Reviews

Overall, this is a lukewarm effort, offering a generic formula of syrupy love songs and a few bouncy tracks. -- The Source

5.0 out of 5 stars Tyrese Nostalgia March 11, 2003
Format:Audio CD
When I saw that the new Tyrese CD was coming out, it made me feel nostalgic for his debut CD. I was starting to regret giving away his CD to a friend because she really liked it. However, I have since gotten a new copy, and I just love it. Listening to it again brought back sweet memories for me. Tracks such as "Sweet Lady" and "Lately" remind me of the times when I needed a good soak in a tub of warm music with the man I love (this is, of course, not a literal tub). "Ain't Nothin' Like A Jones" made me want to create my own choreography. "Promises" hit a core with me after going through countless relationships where the man made promises that he couldn't and didn't keep.
All in all, I recommend this CD for anyone who is into love songs with good beats and lyrically strong. It's a good mix.

2.0 out of 5 stars What Happened? June 7, 2000
Format:Audio CD
He is a talented singer and dancer but what happened to the songs. Pathetic first outing but he can recover. Find somebody else to make your cd Tyrese. Sounds like u picked anybody off the street and asked them to make you a song. Some songs are good but what isnt good is absolutely awful. Here are my picks as best of the album:
Lately great song with a amazing feel to it. Definitely the best song on the album. Just wish the rest of the songs could have followed the pattern.
Sweet Lady another good love song and really proved Tyrese as a serious singer.
You Get Yours good upbeat song and surprisingly had good background vocals. Good use of beats.
Give Love a Try took a while to grow on me but sounded good eventually. Weird sounds used but pieced together nicely.
I hope that he can recover from this cuz he really has talent. He also has very good appeal from appearing on MTV and other places. All I can say is get a new producer. Sleeper pick: Nobody Else nice first single and showed Tyrese as a singer and dancer Waste pick: The rest of the album

5.0 out of 5 stars HOT!!!!! HYPNOTIC!!!!! February 24, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Tyrese's cd has got to be the best cd I have ever listened to ever! It's a good thing that cd's are built to last, because by now mine would be worn out!! The Sweet Lady video sizzles so hot you almost get burned from the heat! The song "You Get Yours" is wonderful and great to dance to. "Lately" will rise to the top if the dj's are smart enough to play it! Can't wait to see more of Tyrese's videos and hope he continues to make such great cds. You all have to get this cd. You will not be disappointed. It's a true treasure. I've read other reviews after I wrote this and wasn't surprised that others, like me, have it stuck in their cd players like I do. Can't get enough! Looking forward to the next wonderful Tyrese creation. Wish he'd crank out more videos, especially with the sexy water dripping-on-him scenes! GO TYRESE!!!!!!

Tyrese's self entitled CD " Tyrese" is not what I expected at all. I expexted it to be much better. With the hit songs "Sweet Lady " and " Lately" basically make the CD. For an artist with such a distinct, sweet sounding voice that ladies just melt over. His materials for the CD certainly do not reflect the abilities in his voice. However the CD is not terrible it just needs a few times listening to, to really enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tyrese September 15, 2002
Format:Audio CD
Establishing Tyrese as a genuine, traditional r&b vocalist must be the mission of RCA Records' strategic marketing plan for the Watts, California teen who's had prominent roles in Coca-Cola and Tommy Hilfiger advertisements, not to mention Usher's new video "My Way." Tyrese's self-titled album does not include the typical hip-hop soul or watered down crossover r&b. The closest thing to the last is the album's closing song, "Stay In Touch," which does have a pop feel, but its true-to-life lyrics about the singer's loss of contact with his mother is sincere and deserves mass exposure.
The style of the rest of the album, however, is comparable to Ray J or Johnny Gill-- before he teamed with New Edition, of course. The mature crooning styles of both of these talented singers gave them hip adult contemporary feels. Tyrese's upbeat songs, for instance, are funky--one even includes a rap from Peter Gunz--but they still come off as relatively laid-back when compared to the harder hip-hop music beds so many other singers use. His niche is his performance of ballads.
"Sweet Lady," "Lately," and the aforementioned "Stay In Touch" will surely win the up-and-coming singer plenty of support. His lyrics offer the sincerity that's missing in most r&b music. "Lately have I told you I love/Lately have I told you, you mean the world to me," he sings on "Lately."
Tyrese proves that being lewd and drenched in hip-hop beats and lingo is not the only way for a young singer to showcase his

1.0 out of 5 stars Driven by MTV... March 4, 2000
Format:Audio CD
The only reason this album went anywhere is because of his gig as VJ on MTV Jams. If it wasn't for that, his album wouldn't have went platinum because the material on this album isn't worth it.
