Brunswick hits of an underrated star,
By
This review is from: Tyrone Davis - Greatest Hits [Brunswick] (Audio CD)
In his sleeve notes Robert Pruter exhorts listeners to turn it up LOUD. It's good advice if you want to enjoy the excellent arrangements that Dakar records producers created for Davis. The hits are here " Can I change my mind", "Turn back the hands of time" and the seminal R&B#1 "Turning Point" from 1975. However as much as these it's Davis' pleading style that marked him out as such a good performer. "I had it all the time" ( with a great spoken introduction) is great,as is "You keep me holding on"They're an excellent indication of why Davis was such a great hit as a live entertainer. You certainly ought to check out the material he records for Ichiban, but if you want to discover a relative unknown, who's up there with Teddy Pendergrass and Al Green this Tyrone Davis collection will come as great find!

TD Deserves More Respect,
By Dexter Richardson (Durham, North Carolina United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tyrone Davis - Greatest Hits [Brunswick] (Audio CD)
Tyrone Davis is one of the most underrated singers over of the last 30 plus years. In my humble opinion this guy is in the same category of Johnnie Taylor, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Otis Redding, and a host of other great singers of his generation. If you want to get a taste of what TD is all about, you need to have this CD. If you buy no other Tyrone Davis CD, this is the one to get. I own it, and have listened to it over and over, and it always sounds fresh. This man's voice is one of the richest I've ever heard. The voice is as smooth as butter. It's so remarkable in fact that you will believe that what he is singing about has happened to him. Tyrone's Greatest Hits CD is chock full of great music from: Can I Change My Mind, Turn Back the Hands of Time, There It Is, It's So Good (To Be Home With You), Turning Point, and other underrated cuts such as Without You In My Life, and I Wish It Was Me. This is a five star production that will leave you satisfied, and wanting more.
