This review is from: U-BOATS IN WORLD WARS ONE AND TWO: Rare Photographs from Wartime Archives (Images of War) (Paperback)
A something-nothing book. Mistakes a plenty eg P108, not a snorkel actually a periscope, or P15 Bow of U Boat? nah the stern. How about the commander on P70? Unlikely - too old.
Pix are largely untitled without names etc and too much of the book does not deal with U Boats but other ships and even here no names or details to flesh out the substance. Frankly it looks as if one of the authors found a box full of old war photos and decided to turn them into a book without any research or effort. Give it a miss

I am checking out these Sutherland and Canwell books as I see them. The Cameron review is spot-on. The text and captions are crass: full of errors. Boats, places and commanders are misnamed; book padded out with pics which have little to do with U-Boats; commentary is childish.
Where did the photos come from? Few have proper credits? According to the publisher's blurb they came from major archives. In that case wouldn't they have used the German Bundesarchiv? But I have a contact there who tells me they weren't approached. Could they be from other authors' German-language books or even musuem walls? |
