An accurate title for this book would have been "Uniforms and Insignia of German U-Boat Crews". The book does cover those things in detail, including such colorful but operationally irrelevant things as edged weapons. The color plates are very good, and the accompanying captions are excellent. What is missing from the book is any substantive insight into U-boat crews: training, organization of the officers and men, what made the U-boat crews so effective. It is also quite annoying that nowhere in the book are the German naval ranks translated into English. The book has its interesting parts and clearly benefits from the interests of the author but it is incomplete.

3.0 out of 5 stars Plenty of discussion on uniforms but nothing else November 1, 2014
By Yoda
This book is part of the Osprey "Elite" series and as such is fairly short (about 50 pages). As the book's coverage is primarily geared towards uniforms it is of some use for illustrators, model and diorama builders and figurine builders. There are some decent full color plates covering the backs and fronts of figures along with a variety of dress (i.e., typical sailing outfit, full dress, bridge attire such as skin overalls, etc.). There are also many B&W photos showing good details and close ups of badges and insignia.
For anyone interested in more details however, such as training, morale, backgrounds, etc. there is almost nothing whatsoever. Hence this is not the book for anyone interested in this service beyond how the sailors appeared.

3.0 out of 5 stars nothing special March 9, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A good general overview of UBoat crews history and uniforms. I assume well reseached and interesting. As with most Osprey books for they are a little short so they are restricted to the actual amount of content. A good modeling resource book.
