Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A collection of some 300 photos, posters, cartoons, operational maps and plans of submarines interspersed with a concise history of U-boats from the between-wars period to the end of World War II, Hoyt's book provides an intimate view of daily life in Admiral Donitz's relatively tiny but formidable command. The illustrations cover every conceivable aspect: ship launchings, training, patrols and raids, periscope shots of sinkings, rescue of Allied survivors, burials at sea, meetings with Japanese submariners, U-boat prisoners of war in Canada, triumphant returns to home port, visits from dignitaries (including Hitler) and shore liberties. The text includes a long excerpt from the log of Lt. Gunther Prien, recorded during his spectacular raid on British shipping at Scapa Flow. Many photos show young submariners in jaunty posesespecially poignant when one learns that the U-boat command ultimately suffered 85% casualties. 20,000 first printing; 20,000 ad/promo.

From School Library Journal

YA A brief and accurate history of the U-boat campaign during World War II. This readable book hits all the highlights, and it's a perfect introduction for newcomers to the subject. Although Hoyt does not present any new information, he does supply many never before published photographs and graphs. The brief text and profuse illustrations together give readers a real sense of the kind of war in which the U-boats were used. Karl Penny, Houston Pub . Lib .

This review is from: U-Boats: A Pictorial History (Hardcover)
No discussion of history of operations, successes, failures, crews, strategy. Many pictures of outside of U-boat but not many that really show how life/operations/repairs were like in the boat itself. If you a modeler interested in only outside of boat this is fine but even then there are not enough close up to capture great detail needed for fine scale modeling. In addition, and far worse, is the fact that nearly all the pictures are limited to photos available in U.S. archives. One would think that more, if not better, were avaialble elsewhere (especially in German and British archives). In addition, the photos have not type of organizational order (i.e., by U-boat type, chronology or activity).
