Still the best book of Grant photos, but be wary, February 18, 2004
This is a decidedly mixed bag, but worth a purchase if you're interested in Ulysses Grant. Published in 1966, Frost's book remains, sadly, the best book of Grant photos. I say "sadly" because there are a wealth of fabulous images not inside this book. Frost also mis-dates dozens of photos and even has the nerve to include two photographs which aren't even of Grant, and identifies the unknown man as Grant. Give me a break.
The text is incidental, not especially interesting, and contains factual gaffes of some magnitude. For a beginner, this is a good introduction, but be wary of the dates assigned to each photo. And be especially aware that the fat man in the bankers suit is not Ulysses Grant, even though Frost claims he is.
God knows when a decent book of Grant photographs will come down the pike. I've been holding my breath for 35 years for this eventuality and still see nothing on the horizon. One of these days, let's hope...
