5 of 5 people found the following review helpful By Gustavo Martinez on November 13, 2006
This game is one of my favorite games I have ever played. The fact that the guy who commented before me didn't like it was maybe because this game takes brains and patience to Make the money, buy the right planes...buy the right weapons for the right level..and be agile and fast enought to dodge everything all these planes throw at you..Personally, I love this game and that's why I've come to buy it twice already. A must play game for those true oldschool gamers!

Great side-scrolling shooter. It is ranked in the 38th on IGN's Top 100 Super Nintendo Games list and it definitely deserves the spot it inhabits. It will keep you enthralled and possibly a little on edge as it provides a steady challenge from beginning to end.

There are a few really great features in this game which I feel are important to note:

1. Choice of Pilot: There are 3 choices here and each pilot has a specialty that will dictate how you play.
NOTE: Whatever pilot you pick is your pilot until you are finished.

2. Choice of Plane: 6 choices each with their own specialties including direction of shots, power of shots, and what special weapons you can bring. Unlike the pilots, you can change out your plane between missions. The only caveat is that you will have to use the starter plane for a mission or two until you accrue the money to upgrade but that is not a terrible fate.

3. Choice of Special Weapons: 11 choices. Aside from the standard shot which is fueled with unlimited ammo, these 11 weapons will be your lifelines when it starts getting really rough. You can purchase these weapons after plane selection. An important thing to remember is that if you purchase a special you CAN get a refund if you beat the mission you just bought it for and do not use it during the level. So it is never a bad idea to purchase a special as a backup if you feel confident that you beat the level. If you die however, the money does not return to your bank.

4. After you complete the first mission there will be choices as to which mission you want to do next. Assuming you pick mission A you beat the first level but lose and want to go somewhere else, well you can as there will be a few other missions and side-missions you can pick.

Overall this game is a must if you are collecting Snes games or if you are just a gamer who wants a great title for the Snes that will provide a good challenge.

This is my review on GameFAQs, and I thought it might be helpful on Amazon.

Title: "It can't be any more fun to be a madman."

U.N. Squadron is my very favorite game. I've beaten the Gamer mode but, I still feel I must... Ah, crap! That would lead to a spoiler, and if I were to reveal it, it would make you say, "Geez, this guy's crazy!" Interesting how a line in the game's introduction suits that.

The fighting in this area is ferocious.

Only fate will determine if we live or die.

It takes a madman to take on this mission... Lucky they found me!

This game's the heart of the SNES library. Let me tell you five great reasons why.

Reason #1: The music

The music of U.N. Squadron is simply flawless. It's so good it'll never get out of your head. From the jovial feel of the Frontline Base to the tragic-yet-uplifting feel of the Project 4 fortress, the music in this game will become part of your soul. Each score also fits the theme of every mission. It's almost like a movie director stepped into the programming scene.

Reason #2: The sounds

The sounds in U.N. Squadron feel like a cross between a movie and the arcade game people think it's a port of. But to me, I know that it was built from the ground up for the SNES. Every shot you make it heard clearly like a gun going off. S-Shells sound like they're drilling into the enemy. Bombs sound like they're falling and they explode with a satisfying sound whether or not it's a hit. Tri-Thunder makes your nerves feel like an electrical circuit. Every weapon you use makes you feel extremely powerful.

But of course the sounds from the bosses make you feel evenly matched, until you invariably mess up and your ship gets blown up.

I heard of this growing up but only played the arcade version (SNK Neo Geo, anybody). The arcade game didn't stand out to me and I never seen the SNES version in stores or at the video rental place. That means I wouldn't play this thing until 2011. I have to say, this is one of those rare special games that is so awsome, I have to wonder why I never found it till so late in life? Let us count the ways.

Play control- This plays alot like gradius or maybe choplifter in that its left to right and sometimes right to left shooting things along the ways. Where this kicks Gradius's ass is, besides cusomizing what you power up, you also get to buy and change jets. Now think Gradius meets Grand Turismo. I had a strong preferance towards the A-10 Warthog. Sure, you're flying a bomber against fighter jets but its the only aircraft that shoots diagnally downwards. You also have a wide array of ordnance that you can buy and equip to each aircraft you have.

Difficulty- fairly steep. You will get used to starting over often if you spend any amount of time with this. That is the price of the old school for you, though. It is a scientific fact that engeneers have been researching and streamlining games for years to make games impossible to loose at so the normal idiot gamer won't feel like less a man for continuing.

Why this thing rules over the arcade- It isn't graphics that make this sweet, its the between level stuff. You can choose your next missions and parchase aircraft. These 2 things makes it all worth while. Its one of the few times Nintendo's ass backwards policy of making home ports differant than there arcade counterparts didn't blow up in their face.

The Bottom line- This is a fine title for any self respecting collector to have in their catalogue. Grab it up today!
