Editorial Reviews

A sampling of chapter titles says it best: "Women Confiential, What Kinsey Won't Tell," "Men Confidential, What Kinsey Didn't Tell, ""Reds in Clover," "Detroit Confidential Crime on the Assembly Line" and "Puerto Rico Manhattan's Incubator." Lots of sex, rumors, scandals and scoops on just about everyone. Fourth in a series, previous Confidential titles were New York, Chicago and Washington, DC.

I realize this is where you write a synopsis of the product and spice it with personal opinions and observations. However, I was familiar with the book before I bought it so it didn't take much to please me.

There was a snafu in the mail. The book took longer to arrive than it should (by over a month!). AbeBooks Marketplaces assisted me with the issues, gave me a refund and won't let me return the refund! By far the best customer experience I have had so far.

Although Amazon is consistently good to me, Abe Books went out of their way to correct a small issue.

...and, no, I am not an employee, a relative or an investor. Just felt like I should pat these people on the back for superior service.

I have made other reviews on this particular book-and will revise them here. The book was targetting an audience-caucasian. It was not written for afro-americans-latino american-chinese american or any other race than the caucasian. The writers were strong in their opinions and had a special hatred for the Democratic Party,President Franklin Roosevelt his wife Eleanor Roosevelt-President Harry Truman were vilified. U.S. Senator Estes Kefauver was made to appear to be a fake. Jack Lait worked for Newspublisher William Randolph Hearst on the Chicago American which was a scandal-sheet and yellow journalism. He then worked for hearst at the New York Daily Mirror which was a scandal sheetcompeting with the New York Daily News. The book itself has researched its history well but distorts much of its good research with slander, misrepresentation, distorthion. In the end it suceeded in being a travel guide for people out
for a good time, it had lists of where prostitutes can be pickedup, where homosexuals can pickup fairies, lesbians can find girlfriends, where those who gambled can find safe places to gamble. It gives a well drawn picture of the U.S.A in 1952.

I got a lot from the book-though it was slanted to discredit the roosevelt and truman administrations. It gave a lot of historical information which coincides with other authors that the communist party{usa}and the underworld had grown to the points that they almost overpowered the u.s. government. The historical content was what was most useful to me. I can see why their loose use of names of public figures got them tied up in litigation but I remember that the two authors wrote at one time for william randolph hearst newspapers which were prone to exaggeration and misrepresentation. If they had written about the eisenhower administration I believe that they would have been disappointed because it was no better than the prior administrations.
