Winding through 14 states from Maine's northern tip to the Florida Keys, U.S. 1 ambles across woods, zips by beaches and straggles down the troubled streets of aging cities like Boston, New York, Richmond and Philadelphia. The road's 2467 miles are strewn with history: George Washington chopped down the cherry tree in Fredericksburg, Va.; New Haven, Conn., once the independent colony of Quinnipiack, was absorbed into the Colony of Connecticut in 1662. Prisons, Holiday Inns, old stagecoach routes, Civil War battles, bird sanctuaries and pristine coastal communities abound in the gracefully written essay by New York Times national affairs correspondent Malcolm. It's a delightful and revelatory journey through a lost America. The 72 duotone photographs by Straus, managing director of Farrar, Straus & Giroux, nicely capture the vagaries of life on the road, from a goat in a shopping mall to an automobile graveyard.

From the northernmost tip of Maine to the Florida Keys, U.S. 1 (known by a variety of aliases from state to state) wends its way through forests and small New England towns, the Middle Atlantic's great overlapping mall-pocked industrial complex, sultry Southern farms and sleepy hamlets, finally giving way to Florida's tourist playground. Along the way, Malcolm tells stories--some historical, some humorous, some sad--about each area. We meet many people living along the highway and visit a number of Mom-and-Pop businesses. Malcolm tends to digress to seemingly unrelated subjects (such as the history of the car industry and the significance of pets), but this is part of the book's charm: like Malcolm it is in no hurry to "get somewhere." Yet these side roads Malcolm tours always lead back to the main road. Illustrated with offbeat but beautiful black - and - white photographs by Roger Straus III, this book is recommended for most popular collections.
