The most comprehensive book on the subject.,
By A Customer
This review is from: U.S. Army Heraldic Crests: A Complete Illustrated History of Authorized Distinctive Unit Insignia (Hardcover)
Catalogs over 3,000 distinctive insignia, with full-color
illustrations, descriptions, translations of mottos, and
other useful information.
A few darker DI's do not photograph well but enough detail
can be seen to identify them. It is hoped this minor fault
will be corrected in future editions of this most useful
book.

U.S.ARMY HERALDIC CRESTS,
This review is from: U.S. Army Heraldic Crests: A Complete Illustrated History of Authorized Distinctive Unit Insignia (Hardcover)
VERY GOOD AND HELPFUL REFERENCE FOR AS FAR AS IT GOES. UNFORTUNATELY IT DEALS WITH 'AUTHORIZED' AND DOES NOT HAVE REFERENCES TO ANY OUT-OF-DATE DISTINCTIVE UNIT INSIGNIA. IN MY LIMITED COLLECTION I HAVE NUMEROUS EXAMPLES THAT DO NOT APPEAR IN THIS BOOK AS I THOUGHT THEY WOULD. THIS INCLUDES MOST OF THE D.I.'s FOR THE ARMY AIR FORCES. I AM JUST AS INTERESTED IN THE OLDER, PREVIOUSLY AUTHORIZED AND/OR USED D.I.'s. ANOTHER FEATURE THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN HELPFUL WOULD BE A TIMELINE IN THE USE OF THE VARIOUS FASTENING METHODS USED. AGAIN, A VERY HELPFUL BOOK BUT LIMITED IN SCOPE.

Good quick reference to identifing current authorized insignia. Does not cover the insignia of decommisioned units that can be found in the ASMIC organizations libraries. Has a good index to find motto's of units as well.

True this book does not cover everything including a couple I was looking for. But there is a disclaimer in the front that explains there is limited space and so the author had to do a bit of triage. That only leaves 3,100 references.Great reference for perusing personal and national history. Also a good place for collectors to start. I never got a got around to starting a shadow box display but if I do then I may want to fill in the blanks and this reference is a good place to find those blanks. I do not know why it is so expensive and cannot find the original price. However you can spend a lot of time perusing. Its organize by type of unit and in numerical order. Surprise in the back there is a reference to "Ira Green, Inc" where you can order the insignias. I looked it up on the web. Not quite as prolific as this book. Now I what the references in the bibliography. I also have "Ready with Service". |
