Clarification of sizing issues, April 15, 2010
This review is from: U.S. Divers 3 mm Purge Low-Cut Snorkeling and Diving Boot (Sports)
I have 35 years experience as a scuba diver and bought these boots for skin and scuba diving in the Caribbean and Florida.
The sizing for this item is man's shoe size and much of the confusion in reviews I think is based on women buying this item in thier normal shoe size. I bought two different sizes, one pair for myself and one for my wife. My size, a man's size eight is a perfect fit. My wife has a size six woman's foot so I ordered a size 5 for her. I would've ordered a size four if it was available but it is not. The size five is still a little big but overall she is very pleased. I suggest women order this item two sizes smaller.
I had two concerns over the design. I am switching from the typical cold water diver boot to this and was worried whether it covered enough to protect from rubbing and abbrasion at two points. If the top last was too short, the top edge of the fin could rub on the top/front of the foot/ankle. Secondly, a previous review about the sewn on tab at the rear over the achilles' tendon worried me about abrasion from the fin strip. Neither is a concern. The boot extends high enough on the foot to protect it from the abrasion from the top of the fin and the rear tab and high back provide sufficient protection from abbrasion from the fin strip. The rear tab is very high and out of the way from where I typically wear my fin strips. The rear tab is not an issue for me.
For 35 years I've walked out of the ocean with a quart of water in each booty, and then hopped about, pulling the top of the booty from my leg to let the water drain out. I can't say that the purge is incredible but it does work. The boots drain.
THe sole is glued on and is robust enough to protect the soles and lower edge of the feet while walking over broken gravel/rocks etc. The sides of the shoe sole come up about half an inch.

Comfortable, but not for extended use, August 14, 2007
This review is from: U.S. Divers 3 mm Purge Low-Cut Snorkeling and Diving Boot (Sports)
I bought these for my trip to Bonaire since the boots I use in Monterey are heavier than I needed or wanted for warm water. They fit great (no size issues whatsoever) and the purge in the back was a nice feature and worked well.
The only problem that I had was the pull tab at the back chaffed my skin raw above my ankles. Granted, I used them for 3 to 4 dives per day over several days before this happened. In the end I folded the tab down behind the heel and held them down with my fin straps so I could give my scabs time to heal. I will be removing the tabs later this week so I can continue to use them for all of my warm water trips and pool work.
Long story short - great boots, but remove the ankle tabs (or replace them with a fabric loop that hangs down).

They run really big, February 13, 2007
I bought these shoes in my regular size, they were really big. I started the return with Amazon and there is no option for wrong size. So they were going to charge me for return shipping and since I bought it on free shipping I was going to be charged part of that too. It wasn't worth returning them. The shoes seem like they're ok but get em a size smaller then you think you need.
