Useful if you don't already know much,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition (Paperback)
I found that a lot of the information in this book was stuff that I already knew, even though I don't have any real formal education in sports and fitness. The stuff on nutrition is basically what you probably already know from your high school biology class, although there are a few good tips that I hadn't heard before. As for the weightlifting and calisthenics, most of it I already knew, although there were one or two exercises I hadn't seen before. If you already work out and eat right on a regular basis you probably don't need this book, but if you're totally clueless when it comes to exercise and nutrition then this book is a good value for you.

All the information, none of the hype,

This review is from: The U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition (Paperback)
This is a great fitness book. It was written by Navy doctors working for Special Warfare teams (SEALS). The book is thick because it is actually two books in one: the SEAL fitness book + the nutrition book. What I found in the book was great scientific information that a layperson can understand, without all the hype and fluff and self-promotion you find in most fitness books. If you want to know how to lift weights, for example, what the % or RMI is, oxygen uptake, and heart rate and aerobic guidelines, as well as BMI inforamation, and information on biking, swimming, lifting, plyometrics, etc., get this book. This book is better than almost all the other fitness books I have seen in that it is almost 100% science, and 0 % hype. Don't let the "SEAL" thing scare you off, either: this book is for everyone.

Let me clear something up,
By Anonymous (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition (Kindle Edition)
I remember this book showing up at the team I was at a many years ago. Nobody gave it a second look and it is ABSOLUTELY NOT instructed or representative of how SEALs do things. If you get something from this book good on you but don't feel for a minute you're eating and exercising like a "real Navy SEAL" this book is just another person making a buck off our hard earned reputation. If you want to know better how we do it read Paleo diet for athletes and visit Gymjones.com or Crossfit.com (although we include much longer endurance with our high intensity interval type training like long swims and runs...) My opinion then and now is this book doesn't teach you anything.

This review is from: The U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition (Paperback)
This book is in a very easy to follow format. The first part of the book focuses on physical fitness. This section not only explains the workouts, but also how to reach your goals with these workouts. The second part focuses on nutrition. Technical terms are used, but enough explanation is given. If you understood high school biology, you should have no problems following along. The nutrition section is very realistic. Most nutrition guides only tell you to eat heathy. This book gives you the nutritional value of snacks that are not the most healthy and explains how to burn it off. There are some chapters that are SEAL-specific, like mission preparation. These chapters may not apply to everyone, but they do make good reading.

Good book but misleading,
This review is from: The U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition (Paperback)
This is a great book with a lot of information but I would say that this is more of a textbook and not a workout book. This would be a good book for beginners who have never made a fitness regimen or for people who are looking for more technical information on fitness.

Fantastic book!,
This review is from: The U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition (Paperback)
Fantastic book! If you're out just looking for the basics of nutrition or looking to be in top notch shape like a Navy Seal this book is for you. This book has zero hype and all facts in a moderately easy to read format. It really set me straight on how different foods effect my energy levels and a very simple explanation of how to loose/gain wieght (a great diagram btw). The fitness portion was very informative and gave great examples of wieght lifting, running, swimming and cross training. All and all I am very happy with this purchase and will continue to reference to it for years to come!

An Excellent Fitness Resource,
By
This review is from: The U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition (Paperback)
This is a pair of military guidebooks (physical fitness and nutrition) bound as a single book for commercial sale.
Pros: -Expert authors make this an authoritative source. -The material is very recent with broad coverage. -The text is written in plain language. -The text follows a truly educational format, with much explanation of terms before advice is given. -Illustrations are clear and used effectively -Even at full retail price, this book is a steal, and is a much better source than many "celebrity" fitness books. Cons: -Material should have been slightly modified for commercial sale. For instance, much of the data, formulas, etc. are specifically for men. Including corresponding material for readers outside the original intended audience would not have been hard.

Great for fitness classes,
This review is from: The U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition (Paperback)
This book is packed with useful info: explanations of fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, supplements, and includes a lot of great exercises and diagrams of the body. This book could serve as the core curriculum for virtually any fitness or nutrition class.

Original Cross Trainers,
This review is from: The U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition (Paperback)
Like so many people, after the Navy Seals killed Osama Bin Laden, I started thinking about their training and got curious about it. Intense stuff. The Navy Seal Guide covers their fitness and eating regime, minus the details about how to harm people. Not surprisingly, their exercise programs are extensive and wide ranging. Apparently Navy Seals were the original cross trainers. Makes sense if you need to swim to shore, run to your meeting spot, and then climb a tree. These guys are serious. Recommended for those interested in a wide ranging program.

Stretches +,
This review is from: The U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition (Paperback)
Lots of great stretches, which is really important for me since I have tendinitis. I'm determined to use this book to become super fit. Love the classic exercises recommended like jumping jacks, but also gives advice for vitamin supplements and weight training. Almost too much information, but better that than not enough.
