5.0 out of 5 stars a good and cheap modem
My experience with this winmodem is very good.
I downloaded and installed the latest win2k driver from [URL]. Everything went very smooth with 48~50kbps
download speed. I feel it is much better then diamond supermax
usb external modem for win2k. The latter one keeps disconnecting
from the isp and I have to reboot the machine to reconnect. It

2.0 out of 5 stars Bummer
I got my 3Com two weeks ago and had a terrible time trying to determine what was wrong with it. Finally, it proved to be a hardware problem. The modem was defective. It seems to be real fast, but two agonizing weeks of trouble shooting is too much since it requires checking both software and hardware.

The model number of this modem is USR5699B. It crashs my system (frequently (I have Windows XP Professional, which is a very stable operating system). After each crash the core dump screen shows that one of its driver file has problem (3c1807pd.sys).

I bought this modem just becasue it is a US Robotics. My old US Robotics Sportster modem works perfectly for more than 5 years. But I am very disappointed at this one. I did not give it one star becasue this is a very fast modem.

1.0 out of 5 stars XP users beware, February 4, 2006

I was recommended this modem by Dell (and THANK YOU very much) and it has been a nightmare. I've done searches on the error message that I CONSTANTLY receive and have found that many other users are having the same problem! And the problem has been known for more than a year (so why DID Dell recommend?!?)

I did a lot of reading and it seems that 'there is a compatibility issue between USRobotics5699B and Windows XP Service Pack 2'. Sure sounds right to me, I have a VERY hard time staying connected to the internet: as in, hardware failures many times in a row and many times a day and, apparently, all to do with this modem.

I have tried SO many 'fixes' in the last 2 months, reinstalling card, putting card in different slot, reinstalling software, updating driver --- yada yada --- and NOTHING has worked (I read one suggestion which might work, and that's to use Service Pack 1). Me? I'm officially giving up, trying to get my money back and getting a different modem & so Good Luck To Me. :^P

So, if you run WindowsXP Service Pack 2 I would really try a different modem!!! Or did you already guess that?

2.0 out of 5 stars I feel like an online crash test dummy, September 2, 2004

It is a shame for 3com to be mentioned, but I am also one of many infatuated customers that happen to find the Blue Screen of Death maybe twice a week when navigating with this modem. Could be the hardware which could be a piece of s*^t or maybe the software (system Drivers).

My OS and machine are more than enough 1024 KB RAM, P3 Xeon, SCSI disks and windows 2000, Service Pack 4.

What could be wrong? My trust in a serious and commited company to deliver something good for life, or the mistake of paying the price for a cheap piece of hardware that delivers pain, in the closest retail store!

I bought this unit hoping to invest on the best, however I am most dissapointed because it failed in six months of low to very low usage. The problem was:completely broke, no nothing either way,and it blocked the telephone line. The disgusting experience is the warrant, because iI shipped to the addres they say to send for claims, and I have had no answer since 4 to 5 months ago.
