3.0 out of 5 stars An Underwhelming But Okay Replica From Hot Wheels, February 3, 2010

This review is from: U.S.S. ENTERPRISE NCC-1701 * BATTLE DAMAGED * Hot Wheels 1:50 STAR TREK Die Cast Vehicle & Display Stand (Toy)
( This review is of the non-battle damaged version of this toy ): I've collected all of the Hot Wheels 'Star Trek' ships released so far, and they've been a varied bunch as far as overall quality goes. The best have been The Enterprise NCC-1701D, and the Klingon Bird Of Prey. The least impressive of the bunch was the Enterprise NCC-1701 Refit... until now.

This release has been much delayed, having been advertised with the first wave of toys back in May of last year ( when "Star Trek" ('09) was theatrically released ). One would think that Hot Wheels would have rushed this particular ship out to tie-in with the movie while it was still in theatres, but no. They didn't even have it ready by November when the movie was being released on home video. I kept wondering what the hold up was...figuring that maybe they were taking the time to tweak the tooling to get it just right. After seeing the toy, I'm still wondering what the hold up was.

This toy seems dinky...easiest the smallest in scale of the bunch ( unless the 'Narada' is released - which is questionable. Though it is listed on Hot Wheels website, it has not appeared in any of the three released waves ). Although this ship is about 6 1/2 inches long - the same as the Enterprise refit toy, it looks smaller in comparison. This is kind of amusing since the movie makers bumped up the theoretical size of the new movie starship in comparison to the original.

Apparently, Mattel/Hot Wheels have listened to some of the criticism of the previous releases and removed the misleading phrase "DIE CAST METAL" which was emblazoned upon the earlier ship's boxes . This is a wise move since there is less than ten percent metal in any of them. Most of the toy is modeled in plastic. The saucer, central strut, deflector area, and the front half of the engine nacelles are molded in a rigid styrene. Oddly, the rear half of the nacelles are molded as separate pieces, which apparently tend to warp during the curing process. In both toys I've examined, the rear engine tips are bent and off kilter. The overall sculpt itself is pretty good, although not perfectly accurate ( to be nitpicky, the central strut is a bit squat, and sections of the engineering hull look a bit enlongated ). One distracting oddity is an obvious screw cover on the starboard side of the secondary hull, which looks like a HUGE hatch. The clear blue domes on the front of the engines are a nice touch , and almost appear to glow when light hits them at the right angle.

All in all, it's a pretty decent representation of the redesigned ship, and an okay toy for a kid, just don't buy it expecting exceptional accuracy and detailing.
