If you want to dive the wreck of the USS San Diego you MUST get this book!,
By David Rosenthal "Author of SCUBA DIVING the W... (Forest Hills, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: U.S.S. San Diego: The Last Armored Cruiser (Paperback)
Gary Gentile; the author of many books on diving. This one is a well researched history of the USS San Diego; my favorite shipwreck. It's as long as a 50 story building and as wide as a 7 story building and lies inverted on the ocean floor at 110 feet. Her six inch guns still point out at some unseen enemy.
The wreck of the USS San Diego has something for every level of diver. It's keel (it's upside down) is as shallow as 75 feet deep and easy to navigate. The ship is huge. It's armor plated sides go down another 30-35 feet before the sand is reached. Don't forget to check out the six inch guns that protrude from the ship's side. Advanced divers go inside the wreck. Gary Gentile's book covers the complete history of the ship both when she was in service, her sinking, early salvage attempts and how it became the premier legendary Long Island dive destination. The book also describes advanced penetrations into the wreck and details of construction and early artifact recovery.

The author provides a thorough past and present history of The U.S.S. San Diego. Lots of information, yet still is a good read. The author is intimate with the present condition of the wreck offering a unique perspective. In addition to this being a definite must read for anyone having dove or planning to dive the San Diego, I highly recommend this book to naval history buffs.
