I was thrilled to find this book had been released because I have a huge interest in military working dogs and have been collecting working dog photos and items over the past couple of years. Schiffer books are the gold standard when it comes to full-color guides such as this one, so I expected that this would have a lot of photographs I'd never seen before and some detailed images of actual working dog equipment, plus plenty of information.

I have to admit that I was disappointed with this book.

It's about half the thickness of most Schiffer books, largely due to the fact that there really isn't a whole lot of specialized war dog equipment to picture. Approximately the first half of the book contains period photographs of war dogs, which are great but about 90% of them are available through online archives. Only a handful, maybe 8 or so, are from the author's collection and were new to me.

The photos of war dog equipment were great, but that sections probably needed to be spell-checked. The author pictures two Bringels (small items the casualty dog would carry back in its mouth upon making a find) but spells them "Bringsell". It's a German word and definitely not spelled with two "l".

I kinda wish the author were able to show a larger assortment of books and manuals, as well as more miscellaneous and paper items. Especially with the books and manuals, I wish the author had shown more of them than just the covers. I own most of the books shown and many of them feature great photographs and information that would be awesome to include in a book like this one.

I was also sad to find that there is really NO information about the WWII war dog program in this book at all.

Glad to have this book a must for the Military dog collector. Have talked to both the author and the gentleman that contributed and both are very "into" this and very helpful. Was impressed with the quality and the complteteness of the book Strongly recommend.

Like most Schiffer publications "U.S. Military War Dogs in World War II: A History and Collector's Guide" by Robert Rosenkrans is a beautifully bound hardcover coffee table formatted book extensively illustrated with various photography on quality paper. The intent of this book is to aid collectives and historians in identifying United States government issued military working dog equipment and paraphernalia. This is accomplished throughout the book with numerous color, black and white photography which for the collector is very important as most of the items displayed within this book are very scarce and collectible, as well is very expensive. I will say that I am not a collector of war dog paraphernalia; however I am very interested in the history, training, employment and operations of the military working dog in World War II. And in this realm this book has not failed me, it has provided me with a lot of information I was unaware of prior to reading this book.
