Editorial Reviews

2008 release of UB40's Greatest Hits. For over twenty five years, UB40 have continued the job of popularising Reggae around the globe. In the process, they continue to give enormous pleasure to a public too vast to be defined by age, generation, tribe or fashion. Coming to prominence in the '80s, they've always paid homage to their Roots. This CD is a must have for all present and future UB40 fans. 21 tracks of UB40 Irie life & love!

I've been a fan of UB40 since the early 80's when Present Arms came out. If your gonna buy one UB40 album thats the one to get
it may not have "the hits" but it is by far their best work, altho Who You Fighting For comes in a close second. But if you are
looking for a greatest hits album pick up The Very Best of UB40 its got a much better song selection and flows much better then this
album. Also if your a fan of this type of music check out a fairly new group called Fat Freddy's Drop their first album "Based on a True Story" is just as good as some of the UB's best work.

While yes, as stated in the other reviews this CD contains the classic hits that made Ub40 so popular, I was highly disappointed that the "editors" butchered up the music in the worst way. In particular they cut out the best part of "Red Red Wine". I would much rather have fewer songs than the mutilated versions contained here.

Probably the most successful reggae band in the world (and at the very least in terms of American success), UB40 started life as a leftist political band and ultimately ended up a bizarrely successful cover band. Their name taken from the UK equivalent of an Unemployment form, this "Greatest Hits" collection does a real good job of making sure that you'll discover that the band was more than just their reggae-fied takes on 60's and 70's oldies.

Vocalist Ali Campbell had plenty of swagger and that helped to make the protest songs (like "One In Ten," a slap at Margaret Thatcher) convincing. He could also croons convincingly, as he does on "Please Don't Make Me Cry." The cover of the Gospel standard "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" presented Ali as a soulman, and the song became popular after being adopted by the 2003 English Rugby team. Ali and his brother Robin were formidable songwriters, and the bulk of the songs were full band efforts.

But it was the covers that made them stateside success, and they're all here. The breakthrough version of Neil Diamond's "Red Red Wine" is here, but in its single version (minus the toasting of member Terence "Astro" Wilson) and that holds my review from being 5 stars. (Also a minus, no real information/liner notes/photography other than songtitles and album credits.) The three "Labour Of Love" collections was where the bulk of the covers were taken, including the Temptations' "The Way You Do the Things You Do," Al Green's "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)." Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love," came from "Promises and Lies," and their version of Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe" (with Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders) came from "Baggariddim," but was one of the band's first US hits.

Wonderful CD. I heard one of the radio stations talking about some of the songs I had heard before but never knew the group that sang them...... and now I do and have their CD. It's good to listen to these songs since they aren't played on the radio anymore. Yep, I am still a radio person.....

Nice to listen to while driving! It's so up beat and helps keep me in a good mood ! I enjoy it at home also, mixed with my other music which is melodic and classic. I enjoy all kinds of music except rap and dull, droll classics that drag on and are not uplifting.

Good collection of UB40's best songs, although I'm NOT a fan of some of their covers like "I've Got You Babe". I do wish they had included "Keep on Moving" in this collection as that popular song deserves to be in any UB40 hits collection.

I like most of the songs, my only complain is 'grooving' somehow the base sound seem to make it sound less clearer than when I hear it played on regular radio. Otherwise a great collection by UB 40.

Great album for any collection. I am an 80's nut and so this is a must have for any 80's music lover. Even if you're not, you'l be surprised at the great beats and wonderful vocals
