Engaging audio book with CSR (corporate social responsibility) points, July 30, 2009
This review is from: UC - Strawberry Fields: A Novel (Audio CD)
This audio book is simply great - which has probably as much to do with the quality of the audio presentation, with its wonderful variety of voices and tonality, as with the author's writing and development of story. The story, which is covered somewhat inaccurately by other reviewers of the book, is in the nature of an enfolding expose' - of corruption in migrant labor treatment in England, both in the strawberry fields and in chicken processing operations. However, the core of the novel remains carefully focused on Irina and her small troupe of initial migrant friends. The voices and pacing of the audio book are handled especially well. Apologies that I do not have the name of the reading actress handy. It's an exceptionally fine audio book, in my opinion. If you, like me, listen to audio books as you commute, you'll be desperately wanting to keep it running when you get to your destination. Additionally, its treatment of labor rights, animal rights and environmental issues begs rhetorically for significant changes. We can hope that books can still help to change the world.
