Product Description

The UCO Chandelier Candle Lantern takes the warmth, ease of use, safety, and convenience of the UCO Original Candle Lantern and increases the brightness. Three UCO 9-hour candles make the Chandelier perfect for larger groups of campers and an excellent choice for home and emergency use. The Chandelier employs many of the same proven features as the Original Candle Lantern - spring loaded candle tubes, twist-lock base, aluminum body, and glass chimney. The Chandelier generates enough light for a family picnic and enough warmth to heat small amounts of water or food - just place your cooking pot on the heat shield. In an enclosed area such as a tent, snow cave, or small room the warmth the Chandelier can generate is remarkable. For family camping trips, canoe and kayak camping, home or cabin use - or lighting the way in a power outage - Chandelier is unsurpassed in providing inexpensive and appealing light and warmth. Made in the USA.

The top of these Candleleirs can also be used to heat up a cup of water in a pinch as well.

I bought 2 of these for camping and burning citronella candles. It worked as I expected. The bugs were minimal at 5' or so.

As for light, it puts out much less light than a hurricane lantern burning citronella oil. (hence, - 1 star.) It does put out a gentle glow and will provide enough light to avoid trip hazards in the woods. It's also a great marker for the tent entrance.

As for safety, you can knock this on its side and eventually the candles will snuff themselves out. I'm more comfortable with my kids using these rather than hurricane lanterns with kerosene. (hurricane preparedness).

I ordered several of these for myself and my daughters living on their own elsewhere. My primary intent was to add it to our emergency kits, as the compact, three-candle design makes a lot of sense for that purpose.

The top of the candle container is a disc of thin metal that retains heat fairly well. This is designed to be a mug warmer when the candles are burning. It does present a hazard as well, of course, but to me, the utility outweighs the hazard when it comes to survival mechanisms.

The only reason I didn't give it a 5-star rating, however, is the fact that it requires a specific size and shape candle, which can be acquired in many places. This may be a serious flaw to some, but as I have an REI nearby (one source), and I've ordered a number of sets of backup candles from Amazon (another source), it doesn't bother me just yet, but I could certainly understand if others felt this to be a bigger problem than I do -(talk to me after our next disaster, and I might have a different view...)

Nevertheless, having three slow-burning candles in one place which can be easily lit separately or all at once, having a warming device incorporated, and having a thoughtful hanging device included make this a useful inclusion in my emergency kit. Obviously, if your needs are purely camping enjoyment, those same criteria apply, but consider getting the padded container as well to protect the glass windscreen. Backpackers may find that too heavy, but car campers won't.

I tested this lantern under two conditions. Ability to boil two cups of water, and how well it works as an outdoor lighting fixture.

I made a video review of this on youtube. Search for "the suburban hippie experimentalist", and look for the UCO Candlelier review.

This lamp was able to boil two cups of water in a thin walled aluminum container with a tight lid in about 52 minutes.

As far as illumination, it is adequate. I could easily make out words on vertical surfaces 30 inches away. I could also read a magazine that was right next to it, so that I am certain I could play board games with friends around this lamp sitting at a picnic table.

To be sure, there is no way you can compare this to a Coleman, LED, or Incandescent bulb lantern. That just wouldn't be fair, they are candles after all...

I gave this 5 stars just for what it is. A candle lantern, that can also boil water, and is made in the USA. I like that it is all aluminum, with a glass chimney.

As for the "survival" aspect of it, I don't think this is a good option as it takes specialty candles that aren't just laying around the house. If you wanted to order lots of extra candles for it that might be an option, however they are fairly expensive.

My understanding, from what I have read is that candles really don't emit any measurable carbon monoxide when the burn as long as the wax is pure(unscented). I think that might be a matter of making sure the wick is not too short. If candle wicks were too long, you would get a dirty, sooty burn in a candle.

As far as this lantern goes, the chimney makes the candles burn efficiently. Just light the wicks as they are.

In the future, I will get a cover for it, but for now will just keep it in the box.

Mark :)

I have been searching for a nice little candle lantern for quite some time. I bought this for a romantic camping trip to the beach. I already have multiple LED lanterns to do the heavy lifting to light the tent, and illuminate the cooking and eating areas. The main area where this shines is in the mood department. I lit this lantern and set it right in the middle of the table at dinner and turned the other LED lanterns off, and everything was suddenly covered in a warm candlelit glow.

Share, food, drink, conversation, do it with this lantern.

1. A nice packable size.
2. Uses specially shaped paraffin candles in a unique spring loaded housing(the beeswax ones are optional).
3. Can be used to warm a cup of coffee, tea or hot chocolate. (I tried this with a small amount of success, it isn't going to boil anything in short period of time.

1. It isn't very bright, I'm guessing if your even looking at it on Amazon, your looking for the same reason I was.
2. If your hanging it, and there is even the slightest amount of wind, you can expect wax trails all over the inside base of the lantern which is a pain to clean up.
3. I bought the neoprene cocoon for it, and it barely fits due to how tight it is. A hard case alternative would be a better idea.

All in all, it's a great mood setting lantern, similarly to what you would set some tea lights out to do. Plus it also doubles in your emergency kit for a light and heat source when the power goes out.
