This is a demonstration of the UCO matches I purchased here on Amazon.com. As you can see they work fairly well! These are a must have for the backpacker/camper, I also purchased an Exotac MatchCap Match Case/Safe BLACK to accompany these matches. I was able to fit 13 matches, and I only had to cut about 1mm off the wooden end to get them to fit.

I purchased these in the twin pack from Cabelas. I purchased them for backpacking trips and for my "bug out bag" (BOB - survival bag). I tested three of them at home. I dipped the first one in water. I blew forcefully on the second one after it was lit. I struck the third one on standard household match striking paper. All three ignited and burned forcefully without falter. These are a bit longer than most matches and SOME containers will require a small amount of length to be removed from the match to fit properly ((the bright orange ones fit them without cutting - the OD green container I have was a bit too short to hold uncut matches). I am very pleased with these matches. USER TIP: I did note that if the match is held completely upright, when the chemical fuel on the stick is exhausted, it may not light the wood matchstick below the fuel thereby leaving you with less burn time. If you hold the match horizontally or slightly downturned, the chemical windproof fuel will, when exhausted, ignite the wood giving you a longer burn time. Obviously, once it hits the wood, it isn't windproof at that point; it just burns like a normal match.

I picked these up as an experiment, and in playing with them with my kids, my oldest decided to test them out. She took one, lit it, jammed it into the snow until it went out, then pulled it back out again; it lit up immediately. Then she stuck it into a cup of water, held it there for a beat, then pulled it out and it lit again. I'm convinced!

These are just what you are hoping for in a match that doesn't go out in any circumstances. Plus they Do burn for about 15 seconds. They two extra strike pads are a nice touch also. Inexpensive and great quality- not much more need say.

I boght these a while back for a boy scout survival outing where we stayed out a couple of night in the desert with only what we could fit in a film canister (for those of you who dont know it is very hot during the day in arizona and very cold at night). They lit every time and stayed lit. I found out that they could be cut into peices and one match, becomes about four as long as you can find a way to strike it without burning your self. the only bad side to these are i did notice the chemicals smell more than normal matches, becuase these have more of the match head material and i found unlike normal matches it burns out once it gets to the wood, so you will have a strong burning fire for 15 seconds, but you will have to tip the match upsidedown to keep the flame going. Other than that great product and definatly worth the money for the added probability of geting a fire going. I'm not one to give out 5 stars often, but this product is so simple and effictive that it deserves it.

I have no idea what went wrong with my matches but I purchased 5 boxes of these and all five boxes seem to have about the same success rate when lighting... approximately 1 in 5. I do not know if this is my fault in that, I am trying to light them wrong? or what? but these things just do not want to light for me. I strike them, I get a puff of smoke, and nothing. I strike again, another puff, no light. I keep striking until there is no more strike head left, I call that one a dud, and pull out another one. this goes on and on until one of them actually catches and burns the whole way down. when this happens, I am impressed because it goes off like a freakin' firework. however, since it takes between three and five matches for this to happen I am not so impressed. In the end I resorted to setting them off with my pocket Fresnel lens, a Strike-anywhere-Match, or some other heat source. My attempts to set them off with my fire steel were unsuccessful.

considering all the other very positive reviews about these matches on-line I am going to chalk it up to factory defect, or, somehow, user error?

whatever the case, I was very disappointed in their performance.

**update: 2 Nov 2013**

After reading some other user's problems and reviews it would seem that my living in Florida is something to note. I live in a very humid environment and I feel that this is probably the best explanation for the products poor performance. . the bag that the matches came in is not sealed, only folded over and the striker is outright exposed. I still give the one rating because given the title "storm-proof matches" one would think that they would be able to handle a little humidity.

Wet, dry, windy, underwater, hurricane, in the shower, doesn't matter. Regardless of conditions these will burn. If you do your part (kindling prep), you WILL have a fire.

I partially filled my sink with water and dropped one in , then pulled it out and lightly wiped off the match with my shirt before lighting it. It lit up on the first strike. While burning I threw it in the sink and watched it bubble for about 4 - 5 seconds fully submerged in water before eventually going out.

Later on I lit one (first strike) and threw it in a snow bank; it burned the entire 15 seconds, melting a hole deeper and deeper in the snow as it burned. Amazing.
