4.0 out of 5 stars Really good, but can be improved
These matches came in a cardboard box and a plastic bag, with two extra strikers included. The matches themselves have a long orange stem which can be safely held while lighting. Holding the wooden section can result in a cracked match. The box strikers are not waterproof but can be smeared with small amounts of petroleum jelly to make them a little water-resistant. They...

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
As an experienced outdoorsman I ordered these thinking they'd be a great emergency fire lighter in the woods. They are NOT. Yes they burn fiercely once lit and they will burn when wet. As an experienced outdoorsman I ordered these thinking they'd be a great emergency fire lighter in the woods. They are NOT. Yes they burn fiercely once lit and they will burn when wet. (The demonstration of these matches burning under water is impressive but are you actually going to need to light a fire underwater?) The problem is getting them lit. They are NOT strike anywhere must be struck on a DRY fresh strike pad. The package comes with extra strike pads but these pads are highly effected by moisture and dampness. Once the strike pad is even slightly damp they will not light the matches and there is no alternative to getting them lit. Furthermore, once lit these matches spit and sputter sending out sparks that will, and actually did, burn holes in synthetic clothing like gloves, pants and fleece. My old standby is much better. Buy standard wooden 'strike-anywhere' kitchen matches and dip them head first in melted paraffin covering half the match. These will light when struck on damp rocks, metal zippers, wood, even rough fabrics and burn well in wet conditions. No they won't burn underwater but they are far more practical than these StormProof Matches.

Holding the wooden section can result in a cracked match. The box strikers are not waterproof but can be smeared with small amounts of petroleum jelly to make them a little water-resistant. They still light fine after the treatment. Once lit, these matches are almost impossible to extinguish. An electric leaf blower applied directly to the match removes the flame corona but the match keeps burning. They reignite once removed from water as well. I have not tried their efficacy in lighting fires, but the problem will probably be with the tinder/kindling, not the match. Definitely a good purchase for emergency kits, but repackaging the extra strikers separately will give you two extra chances instead of just one. And they are smelly, which is why the package recommends against burning indoors.

I like the matches; they are waterproof like in the video. However, they do not burn for the advertised 15 seconds. They last closer to 3 to 5 seconds.

Whether the matches work or not is irrelevant because they charge $9.99 for shipping and handling on an order of$1.40. I had ordered several items and this was mixed in with the others and I didn't notice until the order was in route how much they charge. Really for these type of items, put them in a cheap envelope with a couple of stamps. Buyer beware on buying these types of items from Amazon and their partners.
