Welcomed Addition to the Annual Releases..., June 27, 2008

I've been captivated by this year's Euro tournament, so I jumped at the chance to pick-up this title for the PS2 (where's the Wii version, BTW?). With full licensing, acceptable player/manager likenesses, impressive stadium detail and roaring crowds, this game does a good job recreating the excitement of the real thing.
With the right and left thumb sticks, the control is quite responsive, and I appreciate the physics of the game are respected. The action is fairly fluid with only slight stutters during cut scenes. I haven't played FIFA or PES recently for comparison, but overall this is a professional presentation that doesn't feel at all like a cash-in.
I deducted one star for the graphics, however. On my 50" widescreen plasma, the picture is quite pixelated, and the players appear like hunched-over mutants. Too, the picture will not fill the screen even in 16:9 mode. I've been debating the Sony component cables, and I may just risk the $20. It's a blot on what is otherwise a splendid game.
NOTE: It took me some time to figure out how to keep from blasting the ball over the goal on every shot. Judging by some of the online blogs, I'm not the only one. The trick is to aim your shot with the left thumb stick and then double-tap the "O" button in quick succession. The ball takes on a much more level trajectory, and my goal-to-shot percentage has increased ten-fold.

We bought this game because living in Germany we were witness to all the UEFA Euro cup games and are huge fans of Euro Football. This game was fun for the family because you can pick the country you want to be. For us it was good, but I am not sure the average soccer fan would quite enjoy it as much. More for those familiar with European Football (soccer)
