Great tool for a serious propane fitter,

I've used one of these in my business for about five years. Super sensitive, accurate pinpointing of leaks using the integrated light. Works great in and around gas stoves as you can 'see' where you are going with the sensor. I've found minuscule leaks using it, that weren't showing up with the soapy-water method. Very nice quality for the price.

This device has 2 primary uses: finding a leak, and insuring that there is no leaking gas! It will give you the confidence in both functions. I just replaced a tank with a tankless water heater and had to re-plumb the propane line. Afterwards there was a faint oder of gas, but extensive soap testing gave no hint of which of 20 joints might be leaking, so I purchased this.
Within seconds of using it, a minute leak was located down to which side if the joint had the leak. After removing the valve from the fitting, adding more tape and reassembling, the tester assured me that there was no more leaking gas anywhere along the system. Gas leaks can be dangerous and, unlike electrical systems, there are no safety circuit breakers or GFCIs to trip. This is a very sensitive instrument, easy to use, nothing complicated to understand or intrepid. Just turn it on with a rotating click rate thumb wheel, wait 10 seconds for the sensor to stabilize, adjust the thumb wheel for about 2 clicks per second, and move the long probe around the pipe joints listening for a noticeable increase in the clicking rate - more gas, faster click rate. The red LED in the tip gives some light into the space you are probing, I'm just not understanding why the LED isn't white, but it works fine.

Great tool to have in your truck. It seems to be very sensitive, picking up the slightest amount of natural gas. Paid for itself the first time we used it to detect a small leak resulting from a hairline crack in a trac pipe fitting. We have also let the plumbing inspector use it to test repair work that wasn't under a pressure test. Easy to use without a long learning curve.

The leak detector was the perfect solution to my problem.
After smelling gas in our kitchen, the gas company told us 9 months ago our Viking gas stove was leaking and turned the gas valve off and not to use it till the leak was fixed. Four repair companies came out and no one could find the leak. Finally i went on Amazon and ordered this detector. After receiving it, reading the owners manual and using it; I was able to pinpoint the leak immediately. I called the repair company who came out and found a leaking valve. They ordered the part and installed it last week. Since then the gas leak is now gone and my wife is using the stove again and happy. The detector is great and so easy to use.

This is the second one of these units I have owned. It works great. I wouldn't be without one any more. I have used it many, many times to locate even very small leaks. It has paid for itself time and time again.

Great sensitivity adjustment from "good" to "outstanding". Nice loud click volume, plus earphones can also be used. Led beam at sensor end really helps me see exactly where I have the head positioned. No carry case was provided.
The clam shell packaging was cut and the sides split. While the product works well, what I suspect is that someone bought, used, then returned it. Vendor then "repackaged" it and shipped it to me as "new". I can't find a place to rate the vendor 'Fotronic Corporation dba Test Equipment Depot' (whom I'd ding), but the product itself rates a full 5 stars.

I knew I had a small gas leak and this device confirmed exactly where I thought it was after a water heater install. Great tool!

I knew I had one outside gas leak but couldn't locate the exact source. Turned out to be from a pipe that was underground and outside the house. I saved time and money with the plumber by finding the source before he got there. Since the plumber was coming anyway and I had the leak detector, I played around with it at other locations in the house...gas logs, cook top, gas dryer and gas furnace, plus all the connecting pipes. I found leaks at three other locations inside the house that were not apparent to just the sniff test! I've since loaned it to a friend and am checking my relatives' houses. Not everyone has to own one but it sure is nice to have access to a good leak detector. This one was simple to operate and work with from the start. The UEI CD100A's long neck made it easier to get to some harder to get to places.

I used this for the first time and boy found a leak in a pipe that must have been there a long time but the soap and water test could not find. This really works

Found a leak that soap and water could not,

First let me start by saying that those that gave this less than 5 stars don't read directions, and have little common sense. This unit (used as instructed) finds all leaks, and does not announce false positives. We have been nagged by very faint off-and-on propane smell in the kitchen for 6 months and could not find any leak. Within 5 minutes of turning on this tool, we had the leak narrowed down to within 4 inches. There are 7 joints in this area of the stove, so it took another 15 minutes of working with mirrors and lights, but we found the leak. A previous soap test did not reveal this leak. After the detector insisted the leak was "right here" I used soap and water again... no bubbles. 15 minutes later while staring at the joint I just happened to notice VERY TINY, VERY SLOW bubbles. I removed the NPT fitting and cleaned the threads, applied pipe dope, reassembled the joint.
No more leak, no more faint odor, and a very happy wife. The next day I checked my 250 gallon LP tank, and found one leak in the thread where the Over Pressure Relief Valve is threaded in. The leak is so small, it would take about 10 years to empty the tank. We can't even smell the leak. This is a must have tool for the DIY, but I don't recommend it for "DIY wannabes" that have no mechanical experience, no physics skills, no common sense, can't read, and can't comprehend any theory of operation. Those folks need to hire a professional that already has THIS tool. Don't hire a pro that doesn't have this tool, and thinks he can find leaks with soap and water. |
