5.0 out of 5 stars BJ PENN REIGNS SUPREME AND FORREST RUNS, November 25, 2009
This review is from: UFC 101: Penn Vs. Florian (DVD)
UFC 101
DECLARATION

This was one of the best nights ever in my opinion because my favorite fighter ever BJ Penn proved his dominance with his excellent win over Kenflo. Also it proved what a lack of honor Forrest Griffin has as he ran out of the ring like a baby after his devastating loss. The UFC's first trip to Philly was a good one that even produced some fights in the crowd.

DISC 1

1.JOSH NEER VS KURT PELLEGRINO-the first round of the first fight of the televised card is good but stays on the ground for the entire round basically. Both try to work for things but are very well evenly matched and become almost stalemated on the ground. The second round starts out nice with some good exchanges on the feet until it hits the ground again. This time they try for more but each one defends the other well, it ends with Kurt mounting and then taking the back of Neer. The third rounds starts and we are back into some exchanges standing adding in some kicks. Then we hit the ground and it looks like the first two rounds, some sub attempts from Neer and some ground & pound and passing attempts from Kurt. The round ends with Neer landing some great elbows to the side of Kurt's head, still Kurt gets the win so sayth the judges.4/5

2.KENDALL GROVE VS RICARDO ALMEIDA-the first round between these two is basically the two battling in the clinch. Almeida eventually gets it to the ground and even gets a big slam towards the end of the round. Almeida gets it to the ground early in the second but almost falls prey to an arm-bar and a leg lock. Still he lands some shots from the top and goes into his corner getting advice from the great Renzo Gracie. The final round is very even as far as action because sometimes it is down and others it is up, Almeida and Kendall both do very well in this round. Almeida gets the win after three good rounds, like the last a good fight.4/5

3.AMIR SADOLLAH VS JOHNY HENDRICKS-this one lasts only 32 seconds or something like that and Johny gets the TKO over Amir even though it is a controversial stoppage. When watching it live it seemed justified but in replay it is kinda hard to tell, either way recently Amir impressed me like crazy at UFC 106. Still Johny gets this one.4.5/5

4.SHANE NELSON VS AARON RILEY-this one is a rematch that just so happens in the first fight had a controversial stoppage. This one stays standing for the first round with both guys mixing up some punches, kicks, and knees. It lasts way longer than the first fight which only lasted 44 seconds I believe. The second round looks much like the first for the most part but does make its way to the ground eventually. The third round is all Riley as he basically just handles Shane avenging the loss with the win.4/5

5.ANDERSON SILVA VS FORREST GRIFFIN-now this is the one that I am sure every one has seen by now. Every one thought Forrest was going to give Silva his toughest fight at 205 but Silva did not think so once it started. What happened is with out a doubt one of the most embarrassing knock outs in the history of the world. This is also the night Forrest lost me as a fan, he can say what he likes but he showed he has no honor. The night starts out ok with both guys feeling each other out but once Silva got into his groove and tagged Forrest once he started dropping him. Once he started going he just let his hands drop and stood in front of Forrest and manhandled him. The end comes when Forrest rushes at Silva and Silva just throws a little kiss of a jab and lays Forrest flat.

Once Forrest comes to he gets up throws a fit and runs out of the octagon like a little baby. A man accepts defeat and stays in there for the winner to get his hand raised and then to give each other respect. A real man and warrior which Forrest claims to be in his book shows integrity, honor, and respect, Griffin showed he has none. It could have been chalked up to a one time thing and he just lost it in all the emotion, but in the second issue of the UFC Magazine he says he plans on doing that every time he looses. "Run Forrest Run" away from all the fans who believed in you because you disgraced them. I'll give this five out of five because Silva annihilated Forrest.5/5

6.BJ PENN VS KENNY FLORIAN-the fight that I was looking forward to more than any other not only on this card but since UFC 94. BJ Penn had to come back strong in the eyes of many although I always knew [and still do know] that he is the greatest ever. This was his first fight since the whole "Grease" thing at UFC 94 with Grease St. Pierre, and his first 155 title defense since he crushed Sean Sherk. Kenny on the other hand was a roll dominating other contenders in the lightweight division, and thought he could "kill the master". Of course every one here including me of course knew he had no chance of beating Penn, oh how we were right.

It was apparent when watching this live and more so now that Kenny thought since he trained with old Grease for this fight he could use the same strategy. Unfortunately holding Penn against the cage for every round means nothing when you are not way bigger than him. Also there is no such thing as an out of shape BJ at 155 so Kenflo messed up here. The first round is all Penn dominating the stand up cracking Kenny with some big knees and punches, all Kenny does is hold him against the cage every once in a while. The second round is the exact same round with Kenny only pressing Penn against the cage but Penn nailing him with some good hard strikes. The third round is the same thing with Penn dominating the stand up and Kenny pushing against the cage. The best moment of round three is when Kenny throws a superman punch and gets clocked hard, I love it. The forth and final round is extremely excellent and proves Penn's dominance in the MMA world, the lightweight division in particular. Kenny tries the same old thing and gets nailed hard and then Penn effortlessly takes Kenny down. From there he pounds on Kenny until he gets the mount and smashes Kenflo. Naturally Kenny gives up the back and BJ sinks in the quickest rear naked choke I have ever seen in my life. BJ retains the championship and moves on looking for his next opponent, just like I knew he would.5/5

The special features on this disc is the excellent countdown show to UFC 101, great documentary show showcasing the two major fights on this card.

DISC 2

1.JESSE LENNOX VS DANILLO VILLEFORT-a good first round as it takes a second for them to feel each other out but after that they let them go. Both throw some good hands and kicks, also so good take downs. A great second round with both guys throwing some bombs on each other as well as some kicks and some good knees. Good entertaining round with a late take down at the buzzer but I don't think he meant it to be. The third round was looking to be the best round with some good hands being thrown and a great arm-bar attempt. Yet the ref calls it when a cut leaves Danillo unable to see.4/5

2.GEORGE SOTIROPOULOS VS GEORGE ROOP-two former Ultimate Fighter contestants go at it in this fight right here. The first round is good and seemed like it was going to be over quickly when George gets him down early and passes to mount easy. Once there he attempts submissions and continues to do so every time it goes to the ground. Roop does well one the stand up but he almost looses at various points. The second round starts out good with both trying to end it but it is Sotiropoulos who ends it with a nice kimura.5/5

3.MATTHEW RIDDLE VS DAN CRAMER-these two come out wanting to swing but it turns into a grappling match with one trying for take downs and the other defending. The second round goes to the ground with Riddle all over Cramer but he can not end him. Things start out well for Cramer as he comes out swinging and knocks Riddle down. Riddle reverses things with an arm-bar and controls the rest of the round, Riddle takes the victory.5/5

4.THALES LEITES VS ALESSIO SAKARA-not too much happens in the first round of these two well known fighters other than a good scramble. They both open up a little more in the second each landing some good strikes and achieving takedowns, Leites even gets mount. The third round looks much like the first and even the ref steps in and says "listen boys, it's a contact sport". I love that ref but they pick it up a bit after that, Sakara gets the victory in this one.3.5/5

5.TAMDAN MCCRORY VS JOHN HOWARD-the first round has some good action in it with some take downs, sweeps, sub attempts, and some good strikes. The second round is just like the first with each guy attacking and countering, good round. The third round is a little less active but it is still competitive, good fight that ends with John Howard getting the win. This was a pretty good fight that rounded out the prelims, good event.

The special features for this disc include the weigh-ins and of course the excellent behind the scenes feature. This was a good event and the first in Philly, Forrest went down embarrassing and BJ reigned supreme as only he can.

4.0 out of 5 stars UFC 101 Better Than UFC 100..........., August 29, 2009
This review is from: UFC 101: Penn Vs. Florian (DVD)
I told you guys I would be back for UFC 101, well here I am! once again there are spoilers in this review so I don't wanna hear any crybabies this time around! I am only reviewing four of the fights that happened on pay-perveiw, this in no way has anything to do with the upcoming dvd release of the event! Oh and these fights may no be in order either!
So lets start with Sadollah V Hendricks, I was happy to see Amir in the ring finally after such a long hiatus, but it was short lived as Hendricks caught him in the 1st round slippin. Amir went down but seemed to be coherent, but the ref didn't think he was okay and stopped the fight at 29 seconds in the first round, just as Sadollah was getting up. Personally I thought he was okay and the ref should have waited a little longer, but hey it happens!
Next we have Grove V Almeida, I've been watching Kendall since TUF 3 and am always excited to see him fight! Ricardo on the other hand is boring to me, unfortunately good fortune wasn't with Kendall as Ricardo's take downs were to much for Grove as Almeida grinded out a 3 round unamious decision to win the bout and not in exciting fashion what so ever, but hey like my boss say "It is what it is!".
Now for the co main event which was phenomenal, Griffin V Silva. The hype for this fight was outta control as alot of people gave Forrest a good chance due to the fact that he always does good as the underdog, which he most certainly was in this match up. What happened next was the most embarassing fight I have every seen as Silva dodge every swing Forrest threw, countered with precision shots and totally 150% dominated poor poor Forrest. At one point Silva even extended a helping hand to Griffin to help him stand back up after he knocked him down. To top it all Silva knocked Forrest out with a counter punch while back pedaling in the first round. After Griffin got up he ran out of the ring and I would guess out of the whole damn arena, poor Forrest.
And last but not least Penn V Florian 2. I was amped up for this fight because I like both fighters and I really thought Kenny had built up enough skill to finally dethrone the Lightweight Champ. Unfortunately his skill set was not up to par with Penn's as Bj wore Florian down round after round to finally take him by rear naked choke in the 4th.
Overall this was a great night of fights and I definetly with confidence give this a star more than I gave UFC 100, if you missed this event make sure to pick up the dvd release as soon as it comes out, trust me you won't be dissapointed especially if you thought the previous event didnt live up to the hype!
This wraps up my review of UFC 101 and I will see you next time around @ UFC 102.....oh wait, thats tonite, dueces!
