My Favorite UFC Card of the Year, So Far,
By
This review is from: UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun 2 (DVD)
First and foremost, putting two men with the striking caliber of Lyoto Machida and Mauricio Rua in any type of fight is something that most of us should feel lucky to witness. This was the rematch after their first outing, which ended in a great deal of contraversy because the judges scored it in favor of Machida when Shogun landed nearly twice the amount of strikes. The immediate rematch was set up a few months later and that rematch is what headlines this card. First though, I'd like to review the co-main event bouts.
Patrick Cote vs. Alan Belcher This was Cote's first fight back since obtaining his accidental injury in his title fight against Anderson Silva. Alan Belcher is a very tough welcome back fight, as Belcher is very well-rounded. This fight is rather action packed and is finished with a tad-bit of contraversy. Still, it was a great way to start off the night. Kimbo Slice vs. Matt Mitrione Internet sensation is out to prove that he can fight in the big leagues. Matt Mitrione is even more inexperienced with bigger fights that Kimbo, so it's a pretty even match up on paper, even though Kimbo is much smaller. I don't want to spoil anything, but one of these fighters shows us great improvement since his last fight. Hats off to both of them though. Here's another entertaining bout from 2 guys that are really starting to progress with the sport. This does not go to a decision. Sam Stout vs. Jeremy Stephens The quick, technical striker in Sam Stout squares off against the heavy handed Jeremy Stephens in this lightweight bout. I will say, I would not like to have to score this one as a judge. The first round is a little one-sided, but the rest of the fight is razor close until the end! Lightweights are typically known to push the pace, and when you get two exciting strikers, you get an exciting fight! Most of this is spent on the feet, and there are some hard punches! Josh Koscheck vs. Paul Daley This is not a very exciting fight. Not a lot to say about this. There was some contraversy directly after the fight, because Paul Daley threw a sucker punch after the final bell. Lyoto Machida vs. Mauricio Rua Here we have it. The immediate rematch for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship belt between title holder, Lyoto Machida and challenger, Mauricio Rua. I must say, in the midst of all the contraversy with the first fight, this fight leaves no unanswered questions about the champ. As a matter of fact, this fight doesn't go anywhere near the judge's score cards. I love to see fighters of this caliber throwing it all on the line for the big win. Again, I feel very lucky for being able to witness men of this fighting caliber. That wraps up the main card to this fantastic event. I hope that anyone who missed the pay-per-view gets a chance to watch this awesome event on DVD.

Lessons Learned at UFC 113!,
By
This review is from: UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun 2 (DVD)
When two great men square off, chances are you'll get a great scrap. And when Mauricio "Shogun" Rua fought Lyoto Machida at UFC 104, it was a great fight. But in the eyes of many, the decision and the belt was awarded to the wrong man. Machida won the fight on all the judges' score cards, 48-47, remaining the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Well, both of these men want the chance to set the record straight. And both of these men want to make sure that the judges have no say in who wins this fight! This is the Main Event for UFC 113!
The Co-Main Event is two trash talkers, both with big knock out power. Josh Koscheck has become a man with one-punch knock out power, and it has found targets several times. Paul Daley is also known for powerful strikes, and he wants to knock out Koscheck, plain and simple. I don't like you, you don't like me! Let's do this! And another featured fight is quite interesting as well. Kimbo Slice has made it to the UFC, and so has Matt Mitrione. Both were on TUF Heavyweights, and both of them made waves, Kimbo as the street fighter, Mitrione as simply being a "Meathead." Who's going to school who? This is a great card! There are 11 fights altogether on this card, and I'll list 'em below! Jason MacDonald vs. John Salter: Well, "The Athlete" gets another shot at the big show! He takes on a seasoned wrestler who comes to bring it. While this gets interesting, it ends rather unfortunately with a sickening injury. Now, it isn't nearly as bad as Corey Hill's broken leg, but it still is rather sad to watch. And a 1st round TKO is awarded to the winner. Yoshiyuki Yoshida vs. Mike Guymon: With Yoshida, either he gets knocked out quick, or he taps somebody else really quick, so it would only make sense in this fight with "The Joker," right? Nope. It is a really good fight, and goes to a unanimous decision! Tim Hague vs. Joey Beltran: To say the least, Hague got the short end of the stick in his fight with Tucscherer. Joey Beltran is simply heavy handed! This is a great Heavyweight match-up that goes to a unanimous decision! T.J. Grant vs. Johny Hendricks: Both of these guys have always impressed me, because they always fight to win, and they always bring it. This is a great scrap, unfortunately has a point deducted, but goes to an awesome majority decision! Marcus Davis vs. Jonathan Goulet: Both of these guys are looking to get back on track. Goulet is the hometown hero, and Davis always comes for a war. Really good scrap that ends with a 2nd round TKO! Joe Doerksen vs. Tom Lawlor: Always ready to fight at a moment's notice, Doerksen has had his share of scraps in the UFC, losing the majority of them. Lawlor is coming off a split decision that he got screwed in against Aaron Simpson. This is great, with Lawlor as the Dan Severn look-a-like, but one man walks away with a 2nd round submission! Patrick Cote vs. Alan Belcher: In his home country, "The Predator" is back, and wants another shot at the title! But standing in his way is a man with some "Talent" of his own, and he also wants an eventual title shot. Great fight, and ends with a 2nd round submission! Kimbo Slice vs. Matt Mitrione: Well, we didn't get the street fight knock out we expected in Kimbo's UFC debut against Houston Alexander, but he did win a decision. Mitrione fought a pissed off Marcus Jones in that same Finale, and knocked him clean out. Both men come to bring it, and one of them gets a 2nd round TKO! And unfortunately, one man's UFC dream is shortly lived after this fight. But it was fun while it lasted, and the publicity for the UFC was great while he was around! Best of luck, Kimbo Slice!!! Sam Stout vs. Jeremy Stephens: Sam Stout is the king of split decisions, and has had FIGHT OF THE NIGHT many times! Jeremy Stephens always has his hands locked and loaded, ready to knock anybody out. This is FIGHT OF THE NIGHT, as it should be with Stout, a split decision, and the right man won the fight!! What a war! Josh Koscheck vs. Paul Daley: There is no knock out here. But there is a good game plan that has the winner taking home a unanimous decision! Oh yeah. Following the fight in an uncalled for sucker-punch that sends the loser out of the UFC for good. But maybe that's what he wanted. Well, maybe not. But that's what he got! Lyoto Machida vs. Shogun Rua: All you can do is stare after this! All you can do is drop your jaw and scream, "WHAT?!!?" But yes, the unthinkable has happened and one man gets knocked out in the 1st round!! And a new man gets to hold the belt! In the end, we learn to keep the fight in the octagon, and not to save a sucker punch for afterwards. And as far as the title goes, get two men fired up after one decision is filled with controversy, and somebody's getting hurt in the next fight! This is a great DVD, with a lot of great extras, so enjoy it!!! Until next time...

Machida vs. Shogun 2,
This review is from: UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun 2 (DVD)
This is definitely one of my favorite UFC events. I was extremely happy to find it half off at [another store] so I grabbed it, and it was well worth the purchase. The fight card is:
Jason MacDonald/John Salter-4/5 Yoshiyuki Yoshida/Mike Guymon-4.5/5 Tim Hague/Joey Beltran-3.5/5 TJ Grant/Johny Hendricks-5/5 Marcus Davis/Jonathan Goulet-5/5 Joe Doerksen/Tom Lawlor-5/5 Patrick Cote/Alan Belcher-4.5/5 Kimbo Slice/Matt Mitrione-4/5 Sam Stout/Jeremy Stephens-5/5 Josh Koscheck/Paul Daley-3/5 Lyoto Machida/Mauricio Rua-5/5 As you can see, most of the fights were great. Hague/Beltran (both gassed out) and Kos/Daley (wrestling snoozefest) are the only two average-to-bad fights on the card. The rest of the ones I marked down had certain points in the fight that were just painful to watch, but that was really the only reason. This is a good event and is well worth the purchase.
