Product Description

Mankind has been dealt a cruel blow. We have lost our homeworld. And yet, we are not defeated. Now, we fight for the survival of our race. Now, we fight to conquer a new home for mankind planet Mars. Take command of the UFO: Afterlight task force. The base camp on the surface of Mars is self-sustainable, providing oxygenated air, water and nutrients. Mars is a barren planet, a wasteland of dust and rock. If mankind is to survive, Mars must be tamed. Squad based tactical action and global strategy take centre stage as you manage resources, research advanced technologies and control elite ground troops to secure a new future for humanity. Embarking upon areas of research is of paramount importance. New and unexpected enemies appear in the form of sentient robots, built centuries ago by unknown aliens for their protection and whose purpose it is to eliminate any traces of other civilizations on Mars. Humans on Mars now have a good reason for their own development, even though not knowing yet that the planetary self-defence mechanism might not be the worst awaiting them, and that their unintentional opening of hyperspace gates will bring an even more threatening enemy right to their door. After all attempts to contact the Earth Laputa fail, the colonists are left with no other choice than to fight their newfound terror with their own means. Or be annihilated trying. UFO: Afterlight is a mixture of squad based tactical action and global strategy with the gamer controlling the actions of elite ground troops, and the running and construction of an intricate network of interlinking bases while collecting resources. UFO: Afterlight takes us to Mars, where a human colony has been built with the help of the Reticulans not long before the events of UFO: Aftershock took place.

This review is from: UFO Afterlight (DVD-ROM)
Having played the first of this series and liking it, and then avoiding the second because it looked like utter crap, I was skeptical but optimistic in purchasing this installment. I have to say that they managed to put together a very nice game overall. I was hooked from the beginning and invested far too many hours of my lfe in this game the last few weeks.
The game has a pretty good storyline, though it could be a tad better explained; and there are a few "concepts" that the game completely ignores (such as the detrimental effects of wounding)but overall it is still a great game. I'd give it a solid B+ rating, maybe even an A-. I plan on playing it through again, though because the game walks a tightrope between scripted events and open endedness I don't think it will be as engrossing as the first time through.
For the money this is a great game, I've already got two of my friends to buy it, and I recommend that everyone else does too. Maybe it will encourage them to make a fourth installment or totally remake one of these with an expansion pack.
