A truly outstanding UFO Documentary..., May 16, 2003

This review is from: UFOs, Encounters and Abductions [VHS] (VHS Tape)
One of the problems which confronts anyone who wants to seriously examine the UFO phenomenon is learning which books and documentaries can be trusted, and which books and documentaries are done by con artists or "true believers" who take obviously faked videos or photos and claim they're "genuine" UFOs. Sadly, the "sham" UFO documentaries tend to greatly outnumber the good ones. However, this marvelous UFO video - done by the "A&E" network, is probably the single best documentary I have ever seen on the subject of UFOs. Narrated by Micheal Dorn (who plays the Klingon Worf on "Star Trek: The Next Generation"), it was originally shown under the title of "Where Are All The UFOs?" back in 1997. This documentary offers a superb history of the UFO phenomenon - going back to the first well-publicized sightings in the summer of 1947. You get to hear some rare audio footage of pilot Kenneth Arnold - whose sighting of nine "flying saucers" in June 1947 started the UFO phenomenon in America - in a radio interview done shortly after his sighting. The documentary examines in-depth the famed "Roswell" UFO crash, and traces the major UFO sightings since the forties. It examines the Air Force's top-secret "Project Blue Book" investigation of UFOs in the fifties and sixties. It also looks at the modern "alien abduction" and "crop circle" phenomena. It even examines UFOs as a pop-culture event, giving the viewer an amusing look at the self-proclaimed "contactees" of the 1950's - they were people who claimed to be in contact with friendly, humanoid "Space Brothers" who wanted to save the Earth from nuclear war. The documentary also looks at some modern theories that could explain UFO-related phenomena, such as "earthlights" caused by stress along earthquake faults; and "sleep paralysis", which could explain some "Alien Abduction" stories. What makes this documentary particularly reliable is its admirable emphasis on balance - it offers both the "believer" and "skeptical" viewpoints of UFOs. The documentary also has commentary by some of the best-known and most respected "Ufologists" and skeptics. Among the Ufologists interviewed are Jerome Clark, a respected UFO historian and author of the award-winning "UFO Encyclopedia"; Dr. Kevin Randle, an Air Force Captain and investigator of the "Roswell" incident; Dr. Michael Swords, a professor of natural sciences at Western Michigan University; and Dr. Mark Rodeghier, a professor of sociology and the Director of the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS), one of the few "pro-UFO" groups with credible scientific support. Among the leading skeptics interviewed is Curtis Peebles, an aviation journalist and the author of "Watch the Skies", one of the best UFO books written by a skeptic. Peebles argues that just as fairies or witches were the myths of earlier historical periods, so UFOs are a "modern myth". If you're interested in a truly serious, well-researched and balanced look at UFOs - as an historical, pop-culture, mythological, and scientific phenomenon - then "UFOs: Encounters and Abductions" is simply the best documentary that's been done. Highly Recommended!
