One of the best books in the field of the UFOlogy,
By
This review is from: UFOs the Secret History : The Secret History (Paperback)
I finished reading this book recently and recommend it as one of the best works in the field of UFOlogy. I'm a member of MUFON (Mutual UFO Network), and consider myself well read in the UFO and paranormal domains. The research and documentation is extensive and excellent. It'a good primer for those just begginning to explore this territory, yet there is enough new material to keep even the seasoned "ufo buff" interested. Whether you're a "believer", a skeptic, a debunker in skeptic's clothing, or unabashed non-believer you will be hard pressed to read this text and walk away unchanged. However, I fear the one thing that will keep believer and non-believer forever seperated is the fact that while seeing may be believing, believing is a crucial component to being able to see. Loosely put, quantum mechanics talks of the 'Observer Effect' as consciousness' capacity to effect the material universe at a local level, thus showing that we are an integral part of creating and perceiving "Reality". The concepts and beliefs one holds play a large part in constructing one's reality. An excellent example: When Christian missionaries first went to China they brought bicycles with them. The Chinese never having seen such a thing literally had no concept of "bicycle", and as a result, could not perceive them and tripped and fell over them for quite some time. Read and enjoy Mr Heseman's book. It might just be the bike you need to trip you up.

A rare European view of the UFO mystery,

This book covers not only the classic UFO tales such as Roswell and Kenneth Arnold's sighting in 1947, but also examines newly released Russian documents. Reports and even photos of alleged UFO crashes in Russia are included. It contains quality color photos of modern and historical UFOs (including a 14th century church fresco of a UFO from Kosovo!).

It actually took me 2 months to finish this book because it is long, but it was captivating reading. With excellent, credible documentation, the author gives credence to the existence of UFO's. He doesn't wander into the New Age, spiritual explanation that some authors do. The facts are laid on the table. It is difficult to believe that all these countries around the world are hallucinating. He also exposes the cover-ups in every country he mentions. His illustrations are convincing, and he has done an excellent job of presenting his evidence. This is excellent reading for the novice who isn't certain about this phenomena. His investigation ventures from the past to the present, and I think he should be commended for his efforts.

Michael has several other very good books out to his credit; but this is the one to read if you want to know of the scope and detail of so many of the stories. Many of the stories documented by military from many countries; JUST ONE OF THE BEST HISTORY BOOKS around on the subject of UFO sightings and other related cases. You will be amazed at how many stories and documented cases from even waaay back, and proliferating astronomically today!! All these people can't be totally whacko!!

I have to say that this book lives up to its 5 star rating. For anyone getting into the UFO subject, or even to someone who has been researching it for many years, this book should be the first one you read. In this book such topics are covered:
Roswell, the CIA involvement in the cover-up, George Adamski, Howard Menger (both who have probably the most controversial hard evidence of alien life along with Billy Meier), project Moon Dust, presidential UFO sightings and contacts, UFO history going back as far as the Egyptians/Christ/and the Mayans, Russian spaceships that have actually landed and made contact, the Star Wars program, extremely detailed accounts of the alien autopsies carried out in hangar 18, abduction stories, attempts by the UN to validify aliens, and finally more photogenic sightings such as the Illinois lights. The author in this book just bombards you with information in incredible detail about these topics in a way that won't let you put this book down. As stated in other reviews, every chapter has something in it that you'll find yourself saying,, "wow...". This book mainly focuses on presenting every account that has some significance in it between the years 1940 and 1992. And believe me, a lot happened in those few years. I can personally promise that anyone who reads this book will read somewhere, something that they haven't heard about yet or at least haven't heard it in such detail. This is an incredible book! If only we could get the general public to read such a book, they would see that we truely are not alone in the universe, or on earth as humans for that matter.

It is really a shame that more Americans interested in UFO's do not read the several terrific books by Michael Hesemann, including this present book--UFO's: The Secret History. I realize that this book is nearly 10 years old now, but there is nothing like the "international" approach taken by this author (who is German) that puts a new perspective on famous cases and incidents. As an outsider looking in, he puts forth theories that attempt to tie together the whole UFO phenomenon in a global fashion. And, his writing style is always clear and organized. Even through occasional pages of boring statistics, Hesemann manages to keep your interest and make you think.
I must point out one oddity of this book (compared to his others) that some readers might find objectionable--namely, there are no footnotes or a Bibliography in this book. However, the author DOES mention the sources of his information in the text itself, such as titles of books, personal communications, etc. Thus, one gets the feeling that the author is talking directly to the reader as an informed researcher and in a very personal way. This approach makes the book more of a personal testimony than a scientific tome. However, I have NO reason to believe that he uses this approach to hide a lack of research or to try to brainwash the reader to accept his theories. As for the "secret history" that the author writes about, I must warn the prospective reader that this book DOES contain most of the same cases that one reads about in virtually every other UFO "history" book. However, Hesemann has the ability to tie together different cases and to create theories that most other authors do not even attempt. I do not think that any UFO "buff" will feel disappointed after purchasing and reading this 1998 book by Hesemann.

I have found Michael Hesemann's book to be the most comprehensive and serious treatment of the subject. If you are new to the subject, start with this book, you'll get an excellent history of the ufo phenomenon. There is information in this book that I've not read anywhere.
