3.0 out of 5 stars Very mixed experience
I understand why people are impressed with this game. It has fantastic level design that it burns through at a rapid clip, seldom requiring you to backtrack. The characters look good and are well voice-acted, and the plot is good for a video game -- meaning it's a string of recognizable cliches from movies. The plot usually feels tightly constricted, like you're...

5.0 out of 5 stars It's games like this that make me glad I have a PS3, February 28, 2011

This review is from: UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves - Game of The Year Edition (Video Game)
I've only had a PS3 for a few months and to be honest, I wasn't initially that interested in the Uncharted games. But a friend of mine told me that they were the first games I should be playing, saying they were like Tomb Raider with a Gears of War cover system and with voice acting that made it seem as if you were watching a movie. Well, he was right.

While Uncharted was a really fun game, Uncharted 2 surpasses it in every way and wowed me enough to inspire writing this review. While number one took me a couple hours to really get into, number two hooked me from the very beginning. Trying to climb up a train that's slowly working its way to sliding off a cliff in the opening sequence was intense and I enjoyed how the story jumped backward and let you play the events that led up to that point. The story and the characters in this game are also more interesting. Plenty of new and old faces, great dialogue, sarcastic wit, betrayals and everything you could want from a game about pillaging ancient treasure.

What really makes Uncharted 2 shine is the gameplay itself. The fighting feels much more fluid with a lot more variety. Having only six or so weapons in the first game got to be a little boring considering how many freaking guys you had to kill (yes I know it's a video game but how many pirates can possibly be on one island? Even if they found El Dorado, were they planning to split it 500 ways?) In this game, there are plenty more weapons to choose from and a larger variety of enemies to use them on. And the sheer amount of enemies at least makes more sense, being an army led by a mad general and not just some treasure hunting brigands.

The environments were also much more various, as well as the action sequences. The train sequence alone almost makes the game worth playing. Rather than jumping and climbing from one tropical environment to another, you're climbing mountains, jumping through caves, dodging helicopters on rooftops and... well there's also some tropical jungles but, aren't there always when you're hunting fabled treasure?

Graphically... easily the best looking game I've ever played. Sound like a bold statement? Well it's true. What really sold me were the water effects. While everything else looks great as it is, the water was the most outstanding and I've never seen its like in a game. In one of the levels in the city, there is a swimming pool on top of a roof that you can jump in (try it, Drake tries to play Marco Polo with Chloe) and I just sat for a good minute looking at different angles of that pool and marvelling at how amazing it looks. In a game as fast moving as this one, that's saying a lot.

Finally, what has to be said about the Uncharted games is the character of Nathan Drake himself. He is easily one of my top 5 favorite video game characters (maybe just a little bit behind John Marston.) The character's humor, irreverent dialogue, sarcasm and off sense of morals make him just plain likeable. I'd say that I would love to see him portrayed in a movie, but if Marky Mark is going to play him, I'm boycotting. Nathan Fillion should be Nathan Drake in my eyes. (If you don't agree just watch a compilation of Drake quotes and compare it to Nathan in Firefly/Serenity. He even looks like him.)

This game rocks. Looks great, plays great, story is great and so on and so forth. Play it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Package for New Buyers, October 15, 2010

Uncharted 2 Game of the Year Edition is a Must Buy if you've never played the game before as it includes almost all downloadable content that later came after its release (Sidekick Skin Pack not included). If you have the original case, beware for you're just buying the same game with a code to get all the dlc. I sold my original copy to get this version and realized there really wasn't much of a difference besides having a new maybe better cover.

If you have the original game, no need to get this version for you really don't lose out. Here's an example. I sold my original copy for 25$. This version costs $49.99 plus tax which comes out to be like $54 bucks or something. That's a difference of $29.00. This edition comes with extra content that values up to $35. If you do the math I really only saved $6 by getting all this content. It'a deal, but not much. Also who knows if you can even get a value of $25 dollars for your original. Gamestop was only going to give me 12 bucks for it. Of course I didn't except and gave them a big "you know what")

I actually don't mind this purchase at all for I never bought any of the add ons, but I can imagine others who might have or just some. You'll probably be a little peeved after the purchase. To make my point, New Buyers for sure get this version. This game is awesome and it's a Great Deal. Original game owners, just keep your game with the content you bought.

(UPDATE: This review was put up right when the game came out in October of last year to notify current owners who had an interest in the new edition like myself. Item is still a Great Package for newcomers, except that now it comes in a red case for being apart of the Greatest Hits Collection now. Could be a pet peeve for some. Game can be described as a Hight Quality Cinematic Action title at its best. It mixes cutscenes and gameplay very well at a great pace that will make you want to keep on playing. There is Online Multiplayer and levels can be replayed with tweaks after game is completed. There is very high replayability here. It's also highly detailed and beautiful to look at. Its a game that I like to go back to from time to time. It's definitely a keeper.)

4.0 out of 5 stars goty voucher code did not expire as of 12/06/10 (usa), December 6, 2010

The code says it expires on 10/12/10. However, I just downloaded the 28 dlc packs. There should be a download all selection on psn store because you had to click all of them. Uncharted 2 game of the year edition is the same as reguler version with a download voucher and new cover art for the case/disc. I doubt the goty edition would be any more or less buggy than the original.

5.0 out of 5 stars GOTY DLC codes are NOT Expired! Thank you Sony!, November 8, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves - Game of The Year Edition (Video Game)
As is known, the DLC code that comes with this GOTY edition expired in October of 2010. It says so right on the card (which is packaged inside the game box). This previously caused some trouble for people purchasing this GOTY version (instead of the less expensive normal version, which comes sans DLC). I'm happy to report that although the card still says it expired in 2010, as of November of 2011 the code works and downloads all the advertised GOTY bonus content. Thank you Sony for solving this problem. Great game!

First I want to say that the game is good. I am being over critical. The graphics are good the story is great. I dont care for the controls, accuracy with the guns is not there. I think I am to used to Black ops and thats not a fair comparison because they are two very different games. I do recommend it, but just remember it is more a story and puzzle quality rather than a shooter quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE: bonus content is EXPIRED, November 18, 2010

This review is from: UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves - Game of The Year Edition (Video Game)
The game is fantastic. "Game of the year" may be an understatement.
The problem is the GOTY edition content. The glorious, benevolent producers hath bestowed upon us $35 worth of extra content for free...if you bought the game in the first week of its release. As of 10/12/2010, all of the promised bonus content is not accessible unless you pay for it, as though you didn't buy the GOTY version of the game. Granted, none of the content is neccessary to play or thoroughly enjoy the game, but it would be spec-freaking-tacular to be able to, you know, actually GET the goodies that come with this edition that I purchased instead of the standard one.
Buy this game, just don't spend more for the edition that comes with nothing extra.

This is a great game. It's like an A+ action movie, tons of explosions and tons of heart stopping moments. i've been playing the game for hours. However, i bought the game of the year editon because it says that it has a lot of content for multiplayer, but i didn't know that the content doesn't come on the disc. they give you a code and you have to download the whole content. that was my only let down, and that's why i'm giving it a 4, but fun factor is a 5.

Just want to cover a few points, both good and bad about this game. First off, a lot of reviews say the graphics are best ever seen in a video game. Is this really true? I'd have to say no. Don't get me wrong, the graphics are great and pretty to look at, and the facial features (especially in the cut scenes) are superb, but it's nothing that I haven't seen in Heavy Rain. And the backgrounds can sometimes appear jaggy (and yes, I'm viewing/playing this game on a 1080p tv via HDMI), in fact, I'd say the backgrounds are about on par with anything you see in Red Dead Redemption. So to sum up, are the graphics great? Yes (just take the old village up high in the Himalayas - I can just walk around and look at the scenery for hours on end). Are they best thing you've ever seen? No, but you shouldn't be buying/playing a game just because of its graphics (if that were the case, no one these days would be playing the original NES or Genesis games), you should be playing based on game-play and story, and that is where this game excels.

Expect to run around, explore ancient ruins, solve puzzles, climb stuff, and shoot bad guys. Basically everything you did in Uncharted 1, just in bigger and new settings. This is both good and bad though, because as fun as it to run around and shoot bad guys, it gets really repetitive eventually...go to new area, have about 10 times as many bad guys as there are you, take cover and kill them, then move onto the next area, rinse and repeat. It eventually just wears on you, but you keep playing because the story is great and you want to find out what happens next. This game is sorta made/marketed like a summer blockbuster movie is....except I'd say this game actually fulfills most expectations and is way better than 99% of those "summer blockbuster" films end up being.

I will say the puzzle solving is sorta easy, but that's not supposed to be the games strong point (I wish it were), if you want more difficult puzzles, I guess you're better off picking up a Tomb Raider game. But I give the game some credit, because it does give you at least a few puzzles to solve along the way, and throwing that into the already great story, it makes for a great game that I recommend everyone with a PS3 pick up and play. I can't wait for part 3!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing..., November 16, 2010

On the back of the box it says this is being called one of the greatest video games of all time.

Well, I'm a few hours in and I have to agree. This game does everything that the first game did right and more. I like the improved aiming mechanics which makes the combat which was good before even better.

The graphics?? The best I've seen on a console, and I have all three current generation consoles. The sound is nothing to scoff at, either.

The multiplayer is fun, but it seems like there aren't a ton of people playing any more. Later at night it can take a few minutes to find a round. But I really enjoy the online co-op. It's amazing fun.

DO NOT BUY GOTY EDITION, the Code for all the so called BONUS content is overdue as of 10/15/2010, so your paying 10 extra dollars for the original version, there is NOTHING NEW on the Disc of the game itself, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, all the content that is GOTY related is via the download code and it has expired, this Edition is a waste of people's time and money, it should be taken off the shelves immediately.
