Book Description

February 2003
If you've heard the phrase, "You can't take it with you," you may have thought, sadly, that it referred to your trusted shelf of O'Reilly Unix books. Thorough, reliable, and all encompassing, these books are unfortunately not especially portable en masse--unless, of course, you have a copy of the "Unix CD Bookshelf.

The "Unix CD Bookshelf keeps all the books you've come to rely on right at your fingertips, wherever you may go. Version 3 provides convenient online access to seven indispensable books:

"Unix Power Tools, 3rd Edition

"Learning the Unix Operating System, 5th Edition

"Learning the vi Editor, 6th Edition

"Mac OS X for Unix Geeks

"Learning the Korn Shell, 2nd Edition

"sed & awk, 2nd Edition

"Unix in a Nutshell, 3rd Edition

--all from your CD-ROM drive.

The CD has a master index for all seven books and a powerful search engine--and all the text is extensively hyper-linked--so you can find what you're looking for quickly. Packaged with the hard copy of "Unix in a Nutshell, Third Edition, it takes up less than two inches of bookshelf space, and when you're on the run, you can just grab the CD and go. The seven books included on the CD --well over 3,000 pages of useful O'Reilly reference and tutorials-- if purchased separately, would cost more than $330 (US), but the "Unix CD Bookshelf, Version 3 retails for only $129.95.

The "Unix CD Bookshelf packs a stack of essential Unix books into one comprehensive, immensely convenient, and portable small package. Next time they say that you can't take it with you, you'll know better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have book for the serious UNIX pro..!, May 24, 2000

Shikhar Parjan (Santa Clara, California) - See all my reviews
Having read a number of books on Operating Systems in General and UNIX in particular, this book shines out in terms of clarity, focus and appeal to a cross section of users- from the hard-boiled pro to someone making a tentative foray in the myriad world of UNIX... I recommend it as a "must-have" ......!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but needs updating., January 9, 2002

I have the previous edition of this book / CD. I was awaiting the next edition (this one); but I am disappointed with the new offerings. As a lot of people use perl or python these days, along with SED and AWK, I was hoping that the new addition would encompass these two topics. I'll wait to see what the 3rd edition is like.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for getting off the ground, February 4, 2010
Any one or two of these books would cost more than this six-pack. And the CD-ROM is good for cut and past operations. The nice thing about this set is that as things progress and you diversify into other subjects, as perl you never lose the core skills that are displayed on this CD. The vi editor is always present and more powerful than the passing fads like emacs, which will be, replace in due time. And yes I thing each shell has its strength; however after the Borurne shell, The Korn shell is the most prolific. Now for those that think the tcsh and bash shells are in now are already behind as most shells regardless of what you type are based on the POSIX.2 standard. Even thought I have a gazillion reference books, this is nice because it is on line.
