Book Description

UNIX for OpenVMS Users, 3E, makes it easy to see what OpenVMS and UNIX have in common, and to transfer your knowledge and experience in OpenVMS over to the world of UNIX.

Since most shops rely on more than one operating system, it is critical for system administrators and managers to understand the similarities and differences between platforms, so they can easily work in both environments while taking full advantage of the tools and applications available on each. This book offers OpenVMS professionals a concise source of information, so that they can quickly bring their expertise to bear on UNIX file management, e-mail, networking, and security.

This new edition of the book is enhanced with updated references to VMS, incorporates suggestions made by readers of previous editions, and particularly, recognizes other UNIX implementations in addition to HP's Tru64.

· Includes extensive additions to the sections on VMS logical names, on the emacs editor, and on shell programming and Perl
· Describes the interfaces common to both operating systems, with appendices covering command and editor summaries
· Adds emphasis on Linux

Book Description

Help for users that need to interact with two of the world's most reliable operating systems

From the Publisher

The book begins with a tutorial discussing the concepts needed when working with UNIX and the common shell programs. Working into practical examples, the book shows simple daily tasks that map one-for-one from OpenVMS to UNIX. These include system access, file manipulation, text editing and mail. The examples provide commands that are as equivalent as possible, and point out subtle differences. Recent releases of OpenVMS and UNIX have added interfaces that are exactly the same between the operating systems, particularly POSIX and CDE. UNIX for OpenVMS Users describes these interfaces briefly, mainly to reassure users how easy it can be to switch between the operating systems. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential tool for the VMS user/programmer moving to Unix, January 26, 2001
A VMS power user will feel like a stranger in a strange land when first exploring the world of Unix. This book can be an indispensable guide for the VMS user forced to make this odyssey. More than just a foreign language phrase book, offering literal translations of VMS commands into Unix, it discusses and contrasts the basic philosophies behind each operating system. Understanding these fundamental differences will allow the newly transplated-to-Unix VMS user to exploit the strengths of this popular operating system rather than just feeling cheated out of the many powerful features of VMS that have no direct analog in Unix. For the power user, applications programmer, and system admin, all of the important topics are covered clearly and in sufficient detail.

The third edition adds valuable new information on VMS logical names, the Emacs text editor, and the Perl scripting language. It also has been given a new and much improved layout that makes it considerably easier to read then the previous editions. All in all, highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Old VMS person learning UnIX/Linux, May 13, 2007
This review is from: UNIX for OpenVMS Users, Third Edition (HP Technologies) (Paperback)

I have over 25 year of VMS experience. I am taking a UNIX/Linux course at a university. This book is very useful understanding the UNIX/Linux commands as they relate to the VMS commands that I know so very well. I found it better than the two books used for the college course. I recommend it for people like myself.
