4.0 out of 5 stars My Kids love it!
This title is meant for a younger audience and is a blast. Lots of fun, the kids won't stop playing it. If you're looking for gorgeous fun for the kids it's worth every penny.

3.0 out of 5 stars A very, very average movie-based game.
I'll spare you with the usual "games based on movies usually suck" intro that most people do for things like this. Truth be told, I downloaded the demo for Up when I first got my ps3 a few months ago, thinking it'd be something fun to play with my daughter since she loves the movie, and since you can play as Dug in this. The demo was decent, and it wasn't as bad as I was...

I bought this game for the PS3 because their aren't many good old fun kid's game like Mario from back in the day for the PS3. This one is as close as they come to that kind of Mario fun. I also bought this because it is these are the only types of games my wife likes to play. I like all genres but I mainly stick to FPS and some fighting i.e. Street fighter 4. This game is really fun for kids I'm sure and great for adults that like to connect with their inner children, like myself and my wife. Definitely worth it.

I bought this for my girl (6 years) and she loved it. It's fun and not violent. For PS3 is difficult to find a game like this. I recommended for little people who wants to play in a console made for other target.

3.0 out of 5 stars A very, very average movie-based game., May 24, 2010
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: UP (Video Game)
I'll spare you with the usual "games based on movies usually suck" intro that most people do for things like this. Truth be told, I downloaded the demo for Up when I first got my ps3 a few months ago, thinking it'd be something fun to play with my daughter since she loves the movie, and since you can play as Dug in this. The demo was decent, and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Standard adventure/platformer, run around collecting stuff and solving pretty basic puzzles, and 'experience' the movie as you play it. Nothing special, but nothing all too bad either. After playing through the first couple of levels of the finished product, I think the demo was more fun.

Since most people interested in this game have probably already seen the movie and are just wondering how it holds up, we can skip the story portion of the game since it's basically the same. You play as Carl or Russell for the majority of the game, working your way through the jungle, caverns, mountains and skies to get to Paradise Falls and escape from Muntz and his dogs. Most of the gameplay consists of platforming and collecting items, though some levels have you sliding down tunnels and engaging in literal dog fights with Muntz's planes. Carl and Russell play the same for the most part, and have their own unique abilities they can use once you've gotten the right items (but in all honesty, you can get through the game without using any of the abilities after the first hour). They'll need to work as a team in order to progress, like having Carl jump to higher ground using his cane, then using it again to pull Russell up. Or have Russell walk across a thin ledge and use his scout rope to pull Carl up too. Ok, so basically they ARE the same but with different animations and items to do the same things. Through the levels there are a lot of things to collect like mementos, artifacts, bugs, merit badges, etc. They help you unlock extra things like artwork and work towards the trophies, of which this game is very generous with. Anyone looking for an easy platinum, look no further.

So if it's such a basic game, what happened to make it be just 3 out of 5 stars? Well, I'm actually being generous there, though part of it is because when it was over, I did enjoy the couple of hours I spent playing the game. The problem is that this game -needs- to be played with a second person in order to not be frustrating. At times, the second character wouldn't move anywhere, and I'd have to switch characters just to get them going, then switch back to who I was using as my main guy. Other times, the CPU would run off cliffs or into traps over and over. It got annoying, and I highly recommend any parents getting this for their kids to be around when they're playing it so you can help them when the time comes. Other times the other character would freeze in place or get stuck on an invisible object, and I'd have to restart from the last checkpoint. And get this- sometimes I'd jump towards an edge for Carl to grab onto, only to jump THROUGH the wall and die. This game could've used a lot of polish, and even an extra month for testing would've helped it out big time I'm sure. But as it is with 'kid' movies that get made into games, the developers figure they can rush something without putting any effort into it. I was especially ticked at the hit box for the final plane fight, because I'd pass under another plane, and then blow up despite it having went past me 3 seconds earlier. Finally, boss fights and encounters with Muntz's dogs were a pain. Sometimes the boss wouldn't move at all, and I'd have to die a few times touching it just to get things going, or Muntz's dogs would run in circles for their attack while I'm a good 10 feet away, causing the fight to drag on. When fighting them, you have to block when they attack, then after the second block, you make them go away. Nope, you can't use your attack feature that you'd use in any other situation- you can only block for those encounters.

The graphics are standard, and look more like something that even the PSone could've done. Character models and level designs are very simple, and there aren't any fancy CG cutscenes- it's all in-game graphics. But they get the job done, and the characters look like they should. They actually got Ed Asner and Christopher Plumber to do their voices here, and everyone else sounds like their respective characters in the movie. The music is ok, but forgettable, though they do have the main theme from the movie at times. All in all, the soundtrack is average just like most aspects of the game.

I'm not trying to be mean for a game geared towards younger gamers, but this sucker needed more time in development. After playing another movie-based game that was actually good (Where the Wild Things Are for ps3 also), this one was disappointing. Too many glitches, stupid AI and nothing aside from trophies to make me or my daughter play it again make for something you should only get for less than retail price. Heck, just rent it for a weekend and save some time and frustration.

My husband just got a PS3 for christmas, and this is the closet thing I found to play with two players that wasn't an action or killing game. My husband and I enjoyed playing this game together, and did it as a routine every night for about 30 minutes. By the third or forth night we completed the game, and shocked me. I couldn't believe it was over already. Now we are having a hard time finding other games similar to this which are longer. I think this is a great game to play with the whole family for fun, just remember it's not very long. I am not one who enjoys killing games, and action. I tend to enjoy adventure games, and for me personally I love how they instructed what to do throughout the game so you never get stuck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy platinum....... :D, January 6, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

Right to business,

Pros:

-Easy platinum! Which is great for all you trophy, erm, addicts out there.

-This game took seriously about 6 hours total for me to get my shiny platinum. Awesome. Honestly, that was the reason I rented the game... I read it was a quickie. Still, I also loved the movie and would much rather play that for an easy plat over hannah montana ANY day (lol).

-I found myself having a lot of fun playing it. It was a surprisingly entertaining game.

-You can go back to any level you played if you didn't collect anything, and it gives you a list of what you got at the end of each level!

Cons:

-The only thing that was really annoying was the two levels which you HAVE to use inverted controls. UGH. Couldn't stand that. I died over a dozen times, and almost threw my controller into my tv because I never play inverted! I couldn't believe they expected younger kids to be able to do it, and I couldn't! Of course my boyfriend takes the controller from me and does the darn thing on ONE try because he always plays inverted... -.-

Honestly, that's it. The 5 star rating is because of the easy plat, and how it actually kept me entertained! If you loved the movie, I believe you'll like the game. :3

This is the perfect first game for our 5 year old daughter. I wish PS would have more games for this age!!! I give it 5 stars, as it is easy for her to play, and very entertaining to watch! We also loved the movie :)

1.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to love it, couldn't even like it, September 2, 2011
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: UP (Video Game)
Great movie. Terrible game. The platinum is easy and won't take you long to obtain. Aside from that, there isn't much reason to play this one. The controls are terrible, the stages are bland and repetitive, and you'll feel like a turtle moving slowly through these stages with these characters. The collecting is actually the only real bright spot of the game. That's why most all of the trophies are associated with collecting. It isn't too difficult and mixes it up a bit more than some other kid-geared games I've seen. Back to the bad though (as if it wasn't bad enough). When you first start this game, you are thrown into an airplane fight. The up/down function is inverted and there's no way to change it. The target is overly sensitive and there's no changing that either. At the end of the game you'll get another dose of this nightmare. In between you'll be pitted against those evil dogs. These battles are meant to be button-prompt battles, but they don't function properly. So you just end up spamming the square button and hoping you don't die in the meantime. These are especially frustrating in 2 player mode; as the dogs will be hurting both players, who have to share the same health bar, at the same time. Depth perception is sometimes non-existent here as well. The cut scenes are drab and there's no skipping them. There are plenty of better children's games out there to be played on the PS3 (Toy Story 3, The Sly Collection, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, Where The Wild Things Are). This game makes Megamind look like a diamond in the rough. My advice? Don't buy it. Rent it, if you must, for the platinum trophy. But there's no other reason to subject anyone to this glitchy, half-realized mess of a video game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun to play with the kids..., February 6, 2010

First off, I'm not an insane "gamer" that spends all his waking moments on his game box. I enjoy gaming, but I'm not 12, therefore it's not my life. ANYWAY... as you know, it's based on the game... loosely. There are scenes in the game that weren't in the film, but that's what happens when you base a game off a movie such as "Up." Not a problem. I bought it for my 9 year old and we play it together. That's why I bought it. Nice little bonding experience. It's a bit peculiar since it doesn't really START in two-player mode... that apparently comes later. In MOST games in MY experience, games are in 1 or 2 player mode from the beginning. It was a little confusing at first. But we have a lot of fun with it now that we're into the game further.

Played this game with my younger cousin, and it was entertaining. We're both fans of the movie so it does follow along in that direction. If you liked the movie "UP" then you'll enjoy this game just keep your exceptions at bay.
