Book Description

March 1, 2004
From the editors and reporters of United Press International - an authoritative, easy-to-use and comprehensive guide to print and broadcast writing.

Since 1907, United Press International has pioneered newswriting styles and guidelines for both print and broadcast. During the last 50 years they have perfected the craft of writing news "for the ear." In this, the fourth edition, of the UPI Style Book & Guide to Newswriting, literally hundreds of UPI editors and reporters have contributed their expertise and experience to provide this complete writing style guide. Now for contemporary journalists, the easy-to-use A-Z style guide provides practical, authoritative guidelines on spelling, capitalization, grammar, punctuation and usage, as well as other vital data that reporters and editors need in a hurry, and that journalism students can master at leisure. In addition, this invaluable resource includes professional advice by UPI's award-winning reporters and editors on "Writing for Print," "Writing for Broadcast," "Covering the Courts," "Understanding Libel Law," "Wire Style for Print and Broadcast," "News Pictures," and "Writing on War" (including recent war coverage). Historic examples of newswriting from UPI's famous reporters throughout its long history are sprinkled throughout to make this reference of American journalism and events in the last century.

"...the UPI Stylebook and Guide to Newswriting is a gem. Buy it, read it, learn it, love it..." -- Joe Vanacore, Sacramento Business Journal, May 3, 2004

About the Author

United Press International has pioneered many areas of worldwide news coverage and distribution, striving since 1907 to provide news coverage that is fast, accurate, fair and balanced. UP was the first service to emphasize the by-line of the reporter writing the dispatch. It introduced big-name interviews and developed the feature story as an important part of the daily news report. In 1935, UP also became the first news service to supply news to broadcasters. The International News Service, founded in 1909 by media mogul William Randolph Hearst, merged with United Press in 1958. That year UPI began the first wire service radio network, providing radio stations with voice reports from correspondents all over the globe. News people who have worked for UPI are nicknamed Unipressers, and they are legendary in the news industry for their resourcefulness and style. Some famous Unipressers include Walter Cronkite, David Brinkley, Merriman Smith, Howard K. Smith, Eric Sevareid, Harrison Salisbury, Westbrook Pegler, Oscar Fraley, Raymond Clapper, William Shirer, Charles Collingwood and Helen Thomas. Today, UPI continues the wire service tradition of strong unbiased coverage of major breaking news, along with depth coverage, analysis and commentary to provide insight into the world's most pressing issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars My writing bible (and I know to lowercase "bible" in this case, thanks to the stylebook), March 6, 2009
By
This review is from: UPI Stylebook & Guide To Newswriting: Fourth Edition (Paperback)
I use this book almost every time I write, as do thousands of reporters, editors, public relations practitioners, students, researchers and writers in all professions. If you love language, you'll love this book and will undoubtedly find it an essential reference.

By the way, regarding "bible," the "UPI Stylebook" explains: "Capitalize the book or its parts without quotation marks: the Bible, a Bible verse, the Old Testament, the New Testament, the Gospels. Lowercase as a non-religious term: My dictionary is my bible."

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute "must-have" resource manual, June 7, 2004
This review is from: UPI Stylebook & Guide To Newswriting: Fourth Edition (Paperback)
Now in a fully updated fourth edition, UPI Stylebook And Guide To Newswriting is the collaborative effort of Bruce Cook, Harold Martin, and the Editors of UPI. A no-nonsense, professional style manual, UPI Stylebook And Guide To Newswriting features both basic and advanced techniques for the craft of writing for print, broadcast, or television news, with specific information concerning everything from covering the white house or other governmental agencies to science writing, business journalism, foreign correspondence, the law of libel, codes of ethics, and much more. Highly accessible to readers of all backgrounds, the solid information and even warnings (for example, journalists can and have been taken to court for gathering news information in private homes without the owner's consent - even if they were permitted entry by the police). An absolute "must-have" resource manual for anyone considering or pursuing a career in journalistic writing.
